nutshell oct '10 - jan '11 ...

NUTSHELL will be recaps at the end of each month.* because of the random order of topics (well ... maybe except for weekend fiber breaks and bonus fiber breaks) i share on this blog, it helps out for my own reminiscing-ish.

october '10 ... shared blogkets (security-blanket-blogs) that i visited, journaling a little about my looking to SHED and CYCCYL, always several fiber breaks and pop culture related posts, just a few cubeopolis posts, several happy place posts, and just a few food related posts.  (time to roll over some food pics from facebook into a little blog post)

november '10 ... shared the blogket that i visited most this month, did a little CYCCYL, joined two efforts beginning in december, had quite a bit of fiber breaks (including several fave comedians) and pop culture moments, a bit of cubeopolis activity, started (re)cubicle (or r|cubicle) for sharing thoughts about returning to cubeopolis after 13 years, several happy place posts, a few food places, and began the visit with me section of nutshell. 

december '10 ... daily posts for reverb10, a few security blogkets, did a little CYCCYL via teleconference workshops, began healthmonth with team CDWL@edi, just a few fiber breaks including SNL bits and nostalgika, not much pop culture, not much cubeopolis except through a few reverb10 posts, several happy places, mini homage to friends, and several visit with me links.

january '11 ... daily posts listed in a mish-mash order. with the new year, quite a bit of getting in the groove for health month, the love project, and my your heart's desire goal setting. also, a new weekly effort of supporting 3 virtual friends as part of blogger bosom buddies (aka B3) - our way of encouraging each other in our inter-webs ventures. a few highlights included having an AWESOME new year's day FMK brunch moment with breakfast buds, seeing rex navarrete's live performance, starting an 8-week improv class, thinking about amy chua's tiger mom book, and my little share about initiating on-line dating contact with younger men. many fiber breaks this month!

nutshell: january 2011

recapping the month of january ... because of the random order of topics, for ease of reminiscing-ish, nutshell is my recaps at the end of each month.

highlight ... i spent much of january getting my your heart's desire for 2011 (aka yhd for 2011) in order, starting posts as an unofficial healthmonth blogger to hope to do so for february as part of team CDWL@edi, hanging out with blogger bosom buddies (see kay's fabulous post about B3!), and pondering the WSJ tiger mom article and then some (still) about asian children and upbringing. i have decided to start pages for summaries of health month and the love project given the level of activity i envision.

on transforming ... i read blogs and pass my time in a variety of ways.

• security blogkets ... my go-to-blog reads that are like my security-blanket blogs. i continue to enjoy tyler's articles; this month i commented on his article about . i began the month auditing the love project 2011 created by yvette francino and caught up by the end of the month. i am supporting my blogger bosom buddies (B3) yvette of lessons of love from a laptop dancer, kay of planning, preparing, and peace, and rebecca of altared spaces (which i enjoy visiting) i pop in on chris guillebeau's the art of non-conformity and on tyler of advanced riskology where i commented on his post about explorer and farmer,
  
  
• love2011 ... this month's theme - self love. i did a bit of playing catch-up on the weekly assignments of wk1 affirmations and wk2 love goals. some of my contributions to love2011 crossed over in other areas (summarized in nutshell), but i will still list them here - a fiberbreak with lamb's beautiful song gorecki, on initiating contact (through on-line dating) with younger men, getting the love project's week 2's MVP for my younger men contribution, dovetailing the project with operation beautiful for week 3 assignment on beauty over here for my week 3 game plan and over here for results of a couple of make-overs (home and hair). week 4 was all about self-portrait, so i shared a pic while visiting my dad (and got MVP for the week). week 5's assignment was know yourself; i shared my thoughts and results of friend's one word descriptions for me (albeit in february).
  
  
• SHEDn and CYCCYLn ... took a little hiatus on this months posts and because of technical difficulties, we didn't have our january call.
  
  
• health month ... although i'm not part of the official bloggers for january (or february) health month, i decided i'd unofficially blog officially for team CDWL@edi. by mid-january, i started scoping my february rules. i decided it would be good to get to know ourselves and each other so a few interview questions and the results, so far, for getting to know january team members smiles, pho queen, spec girl (part 1), shirlnutkin, and hiccups (part 1). and i did write about how the monthly goal setting is great, and quick thoughts on gluten.
  
  
• transitioning into the year ... i began my annual your heart's desire for 2011, i started a gathering nuts shirlnut-WHO?!, i decided to take an 8-week improv class (with the first class experience),
  

on pop culture and nostalgika ... stuff pops in my head and often it is pop culture, nostalgika, or some viral whatever-thingy forwarded to me (and many others).

• fiber breaks ... just a few here and the # enjoying the comedy of zack galifianakis, a flahsback to jack (of will & grace) - jack's awesome opener to an episode, the comedy of louis c.k., the humor of josh groban (i know. right?), the comedy of rex navarrete (and a second time and a stalker moment that resulted in a great group picture with rex), the comedy of edwin san juan, # and for something completely different, fbi fun & games. given i watch t.v./cable, commercials for geico, hanes' socks, and the occasional SNL chuckles with pee-wee herman and mister wizard.
  
  
• fiber break whirlwind ... rather than a traditional fiber break (e.g., clip, comedy), i recapped my whirlwind week.
  
  
• pop culture me ... many fiber breaks also involve pop culture, i didn't have many (or any?) last month. this month, the first pop culture break deserves to be the first of the year - craig ferguson and the dr. who musical opening. then my on-going love affair with the digital shorts of andy samberg and a clip of andy + pee-wee herman on a night out and more pee-wee and his collection of the secret word. and maybe not quite pop culture, however, i'll include a t.v. show - on modern family and a clip with lily in (almost) a commercial, and one of my on-line faves has been asylum's emily mccomb's a woman's perspective (and this time on premature ejaculation), though i'll miss asylum and look forward to emily's new gig!
  

cubeopolis life ... cubeopolis (aka where i work) has been a mix of reminiscing and current activity. this month was VERY LIGHT with the exception of my sharing thoughts on tyler's advanced riskology article, the explorer and the farmer where i may be a crazy explorer in the land of farmers to later share with other explorers about fun and crazy farmers. (good thing)

going to happy places ... just because ...

• inspiring words ... although i did not post stories or poetry this month, i did begin exploring my interest in cultural transformation - i signed up at character's unite.
  
  
• for the heck of it, random posts ... this month included a happy new year to breakfast buds, the craziness of breakfast buds new year FMK napkin frivolity, and the bloomspot deal for checking out supperclub.
  
  
• i love people ... friends (and acquaintances) then and now - i got a surprise thank you dessert at work from ms. c, reminded myself about my friend jengyee and added links into my yhd2011 post under special intentions (my memorial service homage, her wonderful life, and her charity, jengyee for a better world fund), about my dec 31 email to my friend kelly about my coffeehouse catharsis on how music and paintings touch my soul, about my friend's and her mom's dream trip to go to macau to discover my friend's grandfather's legacy.
  
  
• on dating ... this month i resurrected (reposted) former blog posts, with many on the subject of relationships - and more specifically on dating. for a flashback dating moment, a post about white men i dated in college, before i moved to san diego, and after i moved back to the bay area. i am giving on-line dating a whirl (again). along with other friends, i signed-up on how about we ... , and shared my neurosis thoughts about dating initiating contact with younger men. (over it!)
  
  
• reposts from flashbacks ... this month, i have done more flashbacks in an attempt to pull in former blog posts that are related to current shirlnutkin activities - my faux interview for my take on my life, my (credit) card, which will be turned into a h|month-terview for february.
  

food stuff ... i socialize over food, and this month i made use of my smartphone - over a ella's in laurel heights for new year's brunch and at bossa nova for brazilian-themed food and atmosphere for a mid-stream celebration with fatbet friends. note to self: take more food pics.

visit with me ... in nov 2010, i decided to add a nutshell section some of the sites i have visited - mainly for ease of revisiting and remembering why i even bothered to share something about a site - kind of my accountability web visits, as if someone from cubeopolis were to ask "why did you check out ...?" (and some do - so here is the answer key)

• learning about myself - there is a new year-long project called the love project that is kinda but not like the happiness project and i hope to learn more about myself through these activities. with my healthmonth activities, i'm using my fitness pal (free) and an app but am wondering if i should return to my food diary ($9/mo) with an app. a little mind-chatter as i try out how about we, i revisited operation beautiful as part of the love project assignment for week 3.
  
• laugh out loud (or quietly) - comedians? yes, i enjoy comedy and several make me chuckle - zack galifianakis (here and here and on funny or die's clips of between two ferns), louis c.k. (over here, on twitter, about his show on fx), rex navarrete (at rex's website), ellen degeneres (over here about her show and her vintage amex commercials), SNL's andy samberg and his digital shorts (over here), reunited with pee-wee herman (at pee-wee's website and then some on twitter and on unofficial tumblr), and edwin san juan (at his web site and on myspace.
  
• swirling r|cubicle thoughts - not so much this month.
  
• i learned something new - health, love, culture ...
  
  • with health ... i learned heart disease is the number 1 cause of premature death for women at american heart association's Go Red for BetterU program that has a little healthy-heart coaching tool. as part of a healthy lifestyle and some work activities, there is the president's challenge. and health month's monthly goal setting dovetails with yvette's article on the value of monthly goals and habits that can form. with limiting gluten as one of my health month rules, learned about an autoimmue disorder celiac disease, gluten-free diet perspectives and then some more from huffpo, what types of foods to be aware of and recipes on-line from elana's pantry. and there are supplements to help with gluten intolerance - i5 by Xymogen.
    
  • with love ... for on-line dating, how about we was written up in a gq article. the creator of the love project is pondering starting a new business hallelujah lyracist. the musical duo lamb is reuniting. and as i participated in the love project, i came across discovery questions and the importance of gratitude - with i am thankful journaling, articles on gratitude from oprah about the power of gratitude and from WSJ health journal, and butter bee happy on-line journaling.
    
  • with culture ... there is a WSJ perspective about why chinese mothers are superior shared by amy chua, who has written a book - battle hymn of the tiger mom; chua responded to the WSJ reader comments, a cartoonist emotes, and SFgate shares a slightly different perspective than WSJ.
• pop culture fix - perhaps not too pop culture, but i offered up 3 game show hosts as part of an FMK - pat sajak of the wheel of fortune, richard dawson (r.i.p.) of family feud, and alex trebeck of jeopardy - and this was part of a "white boy" dating post with reference to stuff white people like. with pop culture comes the occasional geek knowledge for which i found geeks of doom, as part of my dr. who + craig ferguson fix. i like music and definitely the music of jeff buckley. and i definitely like t.v.'s modern family.
  
• random - for out and about in SF's supperclub; my app (and on-line) use of springpad to save, organize, and act on the many little notes and voices in my head; links to macau-related travel (the government's tourist office, lonely planet, bbc's about macau, and tripatini).
  
• i read - as part of (re)newing my your heart's desire, i thumbed through sonia choquette's book, and i revisited tyler's post about writing one's biography sooner than later,

• on cubeopolis proper ... the reverb 10 defining moment post includes a closing paragraph of a list of compiled other reverb10 cubeopolistic topics and my whirlwind week recap includes whirlwind # 6 of cubeopolis of training.
  
  
• on r|cubicle ... the beginning of (re)cubicle started in november. however, december was light on this topic.
  

going to happy places ... just because

• inspiring words ... although i did not post stories or poetry this month, reverb10 questions alone were filled with inspiration. among the 31 days were stories i shared with people's words that have inspired me - with one most affecting me, a discussion with my chiropractor about mischief expressed in reverb10 lesson learned. and because of how yvette's post moved me, this is her reverb10 everything's o.k. finally, my friend l.a.g. shared with me a while a back about the greater good science center (GGSC).
  
  
• for the heck of it, random posts ... this month included continued a poach from an email exchange with a breakfast bud about why job fairs are like match.com.
  
  
• i love people ... friends (and acquaintances) then and now - i did a group hug post for just sayin' thanks (a tidy list of previous posts), my virtual hug to jen, my soul sistah, holiday hanging out with piragua and my college buddy, a dash about my 12-year-old-prepube-twin-boy buddy, l.a.g., and a cute short funny-essay from weldon. also i started what i hope will be at least a quarterly thing - ssp|potb - aka shameless self-promotion | pat on the back with my first one about author (and now virtual buddy) yvette francino (and her boomerang post on her site over here).

• learning about myself - each reverb10 post has links to the author's website or go straight to the site over here - with a "life plan - vision board" activity/practice from gwen bell - how to create your personal manifesto; that how i use healthmonth has completely transformed my attitude to a healthier lifestyle dovetailing witha little wager through fatbet, inspirational words of the chronicles of a fierce female fathelete, my striving to rejoin kickboxing at a local mma studio, and support at go red's betterU program; that i used to do the artist's way back in the late '90s so am doing 750words ; that i enjoy bloggers's messages such as zen habits leo babatua; that those things about happiness as researched, studied and shared by the greater good science center are important to me;
  
• laugh out loud (or quietly) - though indifferent to diddy (aka sean combs, aka formerly puff daddy), i totally enjoy the ciroc commercials. my mom and me love watching joan rivers's fashion police, glee, chelsea lately, and craig ferguson. asylum's emily mccombs is once again a staple for girl-speak about dating and relationships. pete, the unemployed hedgehog may be employed by now. and with a mix of laughter, shock, and pleasant horror, thu's food party on IFC is from my friend sci-fi guy (reverb10 ordinary joy). i enjoy comedians with lewis black as an acquired taste through the years (here and here).
• swirling r|cubicle thoughts - will be looking to learn about psychographics (vs. demographics) a bit more to see how it relates to the ignorance/knowledge stuff in my head.
• i learned something new - learned an environmental tidbit that hops helps reduce ammonia emissions from cows. (re)learned about the 7 habits from peggy leyden. i have a total brain-crush on edward tufte because of his data and design dogma. as part of going to bazaar bizarre, i enjoyed meeting the artists behind ash & ember and monkey + seal, as well as jaime zollars. i mentioned psychographics as part of r|cubicle. enjoy mashable for social media + web info. and though the event was last month, movember is an international year round opportunity. glee gum is all natural. and i (re)learned about me in 25 blah-blah things.
• pop culture fix - not so much in december - just a little recollection of flat stanley in reverb10 photo post this will change. obama in 30 seconds because of the nostalgika of bush in 30 seconds via moveon.org.
• i read - not so much in december, although i have been chugging through chris guillebeau's the art of nonconformity and i picked up tyler's guerilla influence formula and yvette's laptop dancer diaries (soon to arrive!) for which that link is a visit-with-me-fest!

• fiber breaks ... never a loss for fiber breaks each weekend (and then some 'tweeners) and this month i found obvious breaks - the sets of comedians i enjoy; this month included nick kroll (as fabrice fabrice), myq kaplan (who is sooo clever and witty AND funny!), matt braunger (two funniest names bit), . and not quite a reader's fiber break, but my fiber break of fulfilling some of the venn diagram wisdom, a l'il david sedaris lovin', toonces (from SNL) the driving cat, will & grace's jack mcfarland and coffee, a scene from mike & molly with victoria and molly, the elements song with mr. harry potter himself (daniel radcliffe) on the graham norton show, and gilligan's island.
  
  
• pop culture me ... many fiber breaks also involve pop culture, however, then there were non-fiber moments with the humor shared about missing missy (via 27bslash6) that has brought tears of laughter to cubeopolis, snark and judgment about the fashion show ultimate collection (episode 1, episode 2, episode 3), and thanksgiving chuckle with wkrp's infamous turkeys away episode.
  

cubeopolis life ... cubeopolis (aka where i work) has been a mix of reminiscing and current activity. this month also spawned the beginning of "r|cubicle" or (re)cubicle - kind of a subset of cubeopolis intended to be my thoughts on re-entering a cubicle setting after 13 years of business ownership/self-employment (from out of my home, even!).

• on cubeopolis proper ... this month included a post with pretty much the cut/paste content of the transmittal cover memo contents for an internal position i submitted my interest, prepping for annual performance review, thoughts about personal branding inspired by a friend interviewing for some positions in cubeopolis, and selecting a veggie recipe(s) for an upcoming luncheon potluck.
  
  
• on r|cubicle ... the beginning of (re)cubicle started this month. i decided to fashion my "roll out" (it's not all that, but it sounds good) within the classic cubeopolis recipe of the meeting phenomena activities - meetings to meet about meetings - a necessary staple, actually. in this case, the roll-out happened over 3-1/2 meetings (maybe i can call it 4 meetings). the result of meeting #1 with myself - a prep-meeting for a brainstormed-stream-of-consciousness long list about ideas for the backdrop r|cubicle. the result of the meeting after the prep-meeting (meeting #2) was my initial short-list.

• learning about myself - results of survey of character strength is from visiting the university of pennsylvania's authentic happiness about positive psychology. i continue to think about thoughts on ignorance as shared here and visited tim wise's site. and i'll be engaged with reverb10 and healthmonth as part of my your heart's desire activities.
  
• laugh out loud (or quietly) - pictures and words from 27bslash6 are hilarious, perhaps a cubeopolis cartharsis via despair.com. i enjoy comedians including nick kroll (here, here, and over here on tv's the league), myq kaplan (here, here, and on twitter and part of a twitter duo), and matt braunger (here, here, and on twitter). then there is ms. emily mccombs who is asylum's "token girl" and has "a women's perspective on ..." bits (love it!).
  
• swirling r|cubicle thoughts - coming across escape from cubicle nation was a light/dark moment all in a good way and perhaps quite a bit of why i have been thinking about r|cubicle.
  
• i learned something new - learned about crushqueens and pedal stomp after sporting my fluevogs. (re)learned about movember, and i do have a college friend with prostate cancer. (re)learned about the ecosphere - it's part of the whole enviro world i live in. and (re)learned about my design fix with design observer, glass house conversations, and risd; i am looking forward to risd's john maeda's blog posts.
  
• pop culture fix - i visit blogs as part of my pop culture fix (of course). for recaps of the fashion show ultimate collection, three sites - david dust, tom & lorenzo, and racked.
• i read - i love david sedaris; 'nuff said!
  

it's december!

nutshell: october 2010

1st monthly recap ... this month i decided to be more diligent about posting and (re)posting from past blogs' entries. because of the random order of topics (well ... maybe except for weekend fiber breaks and bonus fiber breaks), for my own reminiscing-ish, nutshell will be recaps at the end of each month.

on transforming ... i read blogs and pass my time in a variety of ways.

• blogkets ... my go-to-blog reads that are like my security-blanket blogs. i came across 80 20 time, tyler tervooren's advanced riskology, and i enjoy tyler's articles; this month i commented on how to get a year of experience in 6 months. and inspired by a few blogkets, i took a magic 8 ball moment for pho queen where this post includes a few links to a couple other sites.
  
  
• SHEDn and CYCCYLn ... i have been SHEDn with julie morgenstern and started CYCCYLn with kit. what does this mean? well, i started SHEDn earlier this year. and i learned in late september about my friend, kit, writing a book about her clean your closet, change your life system, so i started CYCCYLn at the beginning of the month and shared quite about of re-awakened ideas! as far as SHEDn goes, i decided to figure out how to begin to mash-up with CYCCYLn. some of my activities includes having a dedicated kitkick journal, a testimonial for kit, and tackling my jewelry.
  

on pop culture and nostalgika ... stuff pops in my head and often is pop culture and nostalgika.

• fiber breaks ... never a loss for fiber breaks each weekend (and then some) this month. breaks included clips and/or links from supernews spoof-ish on obama, fashion police's bikini backlash, literal lyrics with a bieber bonus, twitter valuation, project runway catch-up, preparing for performance review clips, viktor & rolf fashion shows, nostalgika with the electric company and zoom, and tidbits about the numbers forty-six and forty-seven.
  
  
• pop culture me ... many fiber breaks also involve pop culture, however, then there were non-fiber moments about my love for mad men, stephen colbert's spooky or dooky (and a check-in), south park's insheeption episode, project runway finale wtf?!,
  

cubeopolis life ... cubeopolis (aka where i work) started way back in late 2007, and this month, i reminisced about 2007 comments from friends and former clients after joining the traditional work force, i shared a fiber break about work critters, and someone was chilean miner for halloween.

going to happy places ... just because i gotta get something outta my head and i'll enjoy revisiting it, i post random stuff.

• inspiring words ... i enjoy poetry and stories. mary oliver is a poet that a friend introduced me to - the summer day and the journey, and robert frost's the road not taken.
  
  
• for the heck of it, random posts ... this month included my fluevog love, a bump (no longer there) i had on my back/left shoulder that i named percy, quick blurb about starting girlnutkin blog, how pumpkin pie is made, man spanx and stadium gal, fetal position at work, and my blog rating.
  
  
• i love people ... friends then and now - rennie reviews films, kit is writing a book (and it helps to 'LIKE' her on facebook, pete reminds me about sci-fi nostalgika, shelley introduced me to joan didion and is a biologist and i had a great time learning about birds here and there, floyd's (aka stupidicus) wife, marlene is an artist and sells on etsy, reggie, my halloween birthday buddy, susan diva from power plant days in early 2000s, work karma for carrie, and photographer chip simons of pigdog.
  
  
• reposts include quite a bit ... karate kid cobra kai yell and espn article, halloween costumes of the past, my 2006 garage sale day, and my maiden voyage on facebook.
  

food stuff ... i socialize over food, so a few places to share - a little about my love for mr and mrs miscellaneous ice cream, the fun psycho donuts in the southern bay area, hukilau in san jose for hawaiian food, san diego's south park's vagabond kitchen, and if i work late, aperto in potrero hill is an option.
