f|break: bat-stalgic

THANKS @therealadamwest for my morning of nostalgia. i was thinking about the batman movie, the version back in the day - the 1966 movie - when adam west (on twitter, web, facebook, imdb) and burt ward (on imdb) were witness to the united world organization's security council members "transformation" - each was dehydrated and then re-hydrated, albeit not quite their original selves.

quote-a-licious ... why did batman pop up into my head this morning? i think it is part of in-my-head jibber-jabber - an extension of a conversation i had with a friend early yesterday morning, which included references to philosophy, ayn rand, coal-fired power plants, mnemonics (mister wet pets), and my friend's sharing of ...
"... the more implied importance you assign to [a person], the greater independence they will assume and the more difficult they will be to manage toward the established goals of the more informed."
... i have no idea if my friend watched batman (back in the day). however, whether he did or did not, SO worth the checking out the imdb movie quotes for the batman movie. meanwhile ...

enjoy your morning fiber break with batman (on imdb)
for ~ 3:04 minutes of movie trailer fun ... POW!

BONUS enjoy a fiber break with batman and robin (over here)
for ~ 3:46 minutes ... precisely robin!

poached pics from the 30th ...

high school reunion
of class of '81

(i know, huh, 30 years?!)

pretty nice lookin' group of peeps
(thanks to joe o - i poached these pics)

low-key-ish ... on saturday evening (10/08), as a kinda-late-registered attendee, i arrived ahead of time of the few friends who asked that i save seats. upon arriving, i ran into one of the high school fellows whom i see during the reunions (and who was good friends with my buddy, dave, that didn't make it up from san diego for the reunion - new dad), along with a few other reunion goers. checked-in and put on the obligatory badge, scanned the room, spotted a few friends, and bolted over.
(oh! and for my fluevog iv sisters, yes, those are my rubens ... but you knew that already, and i took my red operetta clutch for an evening reunion spin.)

din-din tables ... as i have done so often at a few of the past reunions, i sat with louis. a fellow took pics of other reunion goers' tables, so i'm including them here, along with and one of two options of the tasty meal.
missed you, new daddy, dave ... folks say "hi!", and i can't believe a forgot to bring the picture of sebastian david with me. nevertheless, here are pics of other reunion goers.

thanks to deedee who keeps the reunions going on!

f|break: mid-week morn

SNL + pee-wee herman + andy samberg ... there are so many, many fun things to explore.
my new obsession.

meanwhile, enjoy a mid-week fiber break with pee wee (over here)
and andy samberg for ~ 3:19 min on an evening out!

f|break + f|back: me next, i have a credit card

remember the my life, my card campaign by american express years ago? i do. i remember first seeing a magazine ad with ellen degeneres. back in 2006, i decided that although i was likely NOT to have an ad placed with my answers, i would interview myself; my repost of that is below. but first, remember the fun ellen amex commercials? i do. loved the animals commercial. and about ellen degeneres? love her. LOVE. HER.

enjoy this fiber break + flashback with ellen (over here)
for ~2 minutes with a great cast of animals!

(repost from 12/20/06, with a few updates)

my name: shirlnutkin
  • childhood ambition: to learn how to draw, write nifty stories, and shuffle cards like the casino folks (!!!)
  • fondest memory: walking back from brunch w/my folks, while they visited me in san diego (circa 1995), and my dad totally congratulates me on taking the first step to start my own business ... after i scribbled ideas & stuff on the paper place mat.
(well, then there were also the family dinners over holidays (or any dinner, actually) when my brother asks, "pull my finger!")
  • soundtrack: off top of my head, two come to mind - Garden State ... Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
  • retreat: why yes, i would like one!
  • wildest dream: (i got this covered!) maybe not "wildest" but is memorable and "huh? what was that all about?!" kind of sentiment upon waking up ... walking around in a park area where there is a swimming pool full of floating, rolled-up pairs of white tube socks and a hot dog cart nearby ... and i'm trying to get to a building behind the pool that has used office furniture that i can purchase ... and to do so, i have to rock climb up the side of the funky building with the office furniture ...
  • proudest moment: graduating from college (phew!!!)
  • biggest challenge: staying focused (sort of) (... and keeping my car's back seat clutter-free)
  • alarm clock: no machine for me; just something internal - and i'm usually up & about not later than 6:30 AM on weekdays and not later than 8 AM on weekends (and i don't even have a dog, yet!)
  • perfect day: waking up with option to do whatever it is i really just want to do that day - with no external (or internal) pressures ... and as part of that day --- walk around freely in sun, shade, and mild weather ... smell of the ocean, grass and trees ... doing a l'il reading of something ... spend some time with friends/family and make new friends, perhaps ... laugh heartily over a meal ... and at some point during that day, being able to say "thank you" to someone and saying "you're welcome" back to someone else. a simple day can be just the same as a perfect day! (oh yeah, and i'm on vacation, too!)
  • first job: cashier at The Treasury (a now defunct department store), and if i was really lucky, i also worked snack bar!
  • indulgence: laptop bags, hand bags, backpacks, plumber bags, and those things to carry my wallet and/or my computer
  • last purchase: an alien bobblehead (souvenir) from space aliens grill & bar in bismarck, north dakota
  • favorite movie: splendor in the grass
  • inspiration: harold and his purple crayon ... and pigdog
my life: is in transition
my card: is really nice looking (for a business card; thanks, tanya!)

f|back (jul '08): as if i'm white (?) ...

... but with smooth skin. (context, please)

here's the context - during this evening's commute home, i hands-free-talked with sci-fi guy (of reverb10 ordinary joy fame) about how he has enjoyed my blog posts (and i how i have enjoyed writing them). we spent some time yapping about fmk frivolity. major props to sci-fi guy for coming up with (... wait for it. wait . for . it . )
(BRAVO!!!)
(tangent) then somewhere along the way, sci-fi guy said he thought i may still be hung-up on a past boyfriend. not-so-much, however, this reminded me of a post i did a couple of years ago - about dating - i am asian, i have dated caucasian men, and because of those experiences, i have 3 little tidbits to share.
(repost from July 8, 2008 - with a bit of editing only to delete some of the "non-dating" related items.)
well, turns out, i learned (a while ago) that i'm not white. but today, i've got some info that may prove this otherwise ... at least figuratively. (but that comes in later posts)

... so here is what got me excited for my trek to the bus terminal after work. (the bus has wi-fi.) yesterday afternoon, after receiving some text messages from friends up north (... and constantly anxious for things to blog about, for some inspiration, whatever) - along comes THIS over my blackberry:

stuff white people like
and on the list of 104 items* (where you'll find #104 under the "top posts" section) ...

#11 - asian girls!

my duty, as an asian girl (so i thought) ... was to make sure my mac was charged up enough so i could surf a bit and learn what in fact was/were that "stuff" ... and so i surfed and surfed and surfed on the bus ride home, while typing up the first 1/3 of this post.

back to the list ... the list is rich with things to ponder and add and comment and laugh and ...?! after checking out the list, it appears i am either (a) white people or (b) i simply like the same stuff that white people like while i am part of the #11 crowd.

looking back - let's see ... so as part of passing my time yet ANOTHER way, i'll write a bit here/there about how i can relate to some of the "stuff" and i'll start with an easy one -

i, an asian girl (AG), dated a white boy (WB) here and there back in the day. in other words, i have been a data point for a few WBs (again, refer to #11), as well WBs providing little stories for me to tell through the years.
here are three WB memories.

WB #1a: "what's a filipino? your last name is mexican, but you look chinese. is filipino mexican and chinese?"
(for my engineer friends, in mathematical terms, does f = m + c?)
[context: 3rd year in college. boyfriend. cute. smart - but taking up
a little bit of space in the relatively prestigious university
for someone else who knows that filipinos don't look chinese (!)
- we look japanese or hawaiian!!! DORK!]

WB #1b: "AYshen girl hahb berry, berry shmoooojjj shkeen. white girl hahb berry, berry hruff shkeen. shmoooojjj AYshen shkeen!" (spoken while rubbing my forearm as if he was polishing silver)
[context: WB #1 attempting to speak with an asian-ish accent.
why? how the f**k would i know. but i put up with it.
i mean, it was college.]

WMom of WB #1: (WMom greets me pleasantly.)"good to meet you, finally. WB #1 son tells me you are filipino." (WMom turns to WB #1) "WB #1, remember when we lived on guam? we had filipinos? they are such nice people."
[context: standing at WB #1's parent's doorstep,
being introduced to WB #1's mom.
WB #1's Mom's doorstep. an actual porch attached to a ranch-style house,
that was part of a private golf community. clearly WMom was lying.
if she really meant it, why didn't a filipino butler answer the door?! ]

WB #2: "mmmm ... look at that asian p***y."
[context: not spoken during a gynecological exam.
not spoken while looking at asian p***y
on a screen (porn). not spoken about pet or stray siamese cat.
actually spoken during a lust-filled moment of a little petula.
that said, unless WB #2 was going to hand me a mirror or take a picture,
i wasn't going to be looking at anything, any time soon,
thank you very much! (OUCH! TMI)]

WB #3: (aka "the runt" or the bay-city-roller-wannabe) rather than pick a choice quote, the defining #11 moment for WB #3 was at a jazz concert (bobby caldwell and some saxophone dude). let's set up the scene of nearly 17 years ago ...**

... my boyfriend (not a WB) and i were unknowingly walking in front of WB #3 who was with his current AG#1. (important tidbit - my boyfriend was WB #3's former roomie.) WB #3 grunts behind us and says, "i thought i recognized that handsome couple!"

and as we turned around, it was VERY CLEAR (PAINFULLY) that AG #1 could potential sport the nearly same, 1990s big-hair, spiral-perm, chaka-khan, rae dawn chong hair that i was sporting. boyfriend and i were polite, chatted, and took our seats (for which WB #3 was several rows ahead of us).

then, my boyfriend noticed across the concert hall, another gal, AG #2. turns out,
AG #2
(also with big-hair) was an ex-girlfriend of WB #3. apparently, AG #2 was the ex with a bit of a fiery temper.

and THEN during intermission, there was an AG #3 siting - yet ANOTHER ex-girlfriend (with moderate big-hair) of WB #3. yeah ... WB #3 had three ex-AGs at this concert. yellow fever? or four AGs attracted to a runty WB (at some point in time)? granted, WB #3 was a charming, cute little fellow. but what a bummer for that ride home.

AND WTF?! curiosity, patience and a little google-stalking ... with a dash of my lame-ass mock-faux-photoshop-prowess. i found this little article after google-stalking WB #3 by name and by the name of a plastic ball with holes in it. go figure - someone scanned some old newsletters in. (thank you, mr. man who did that.)

smooth skin, over and out for now.*

*on 07/08/08, there were 104 listed items.
there are currently 134 listed items.

**the pic? from '90. no, i do not know where WB #3 is;
yes, i'm thinking WB #3 would not come across this blog.
if he does, meh.

love the holiday (and random) visits ...

... from my friend "the dude" - whom i met just prior to starting my first year in college. today is his birthday, and yesterday was our holiday meet-up. this year - hanging out in SF chatting at mr. & mrs. miscellaneous over post-ice-cream, paragon for drinks and mushroom cigars (sans tijuana donkey), and tres agave (attempting to stalk on foursquare). and for a bonus - my friend nicknamed piragua joined us.
(side note: 1st check-in at paragon got us complimentary
paragon punch drinks. yippee!)

since early 2000s after we ran into each other in berkeley (while we were both living in southern california), we've made a point to meet-up around holidays and pick-up college-logo gear, while also squeezing in fried food, alcohol, and catch-up stories about life. he is still in socal, while i'm now in they bay area. the mini-tradition continues. just a few other key words that remind me of how much i enjoy mike being in my life - bonsai, bingham, calso, dude, mr. dwinelle, flowers, gerbil, text-stalking, and berkeley etcheverry/evans moment asking random strangers whether they knew what a ***job was. (i know - very wrong, but very memorable.)

happy birthday, my friend.
may your bonsai jungle continue to flourish!

a late '70s turkey chuckle

wkrp ... remember Cincinnati WKRP back in the late '70s and early '80s? (more on imdb or wiki) and the infamous turkey thanksgiving give away promotion -- with characters big guy arthur carlson, les nessman, venus flytrap, herb tarlek, andy travis, dr fever johnny caravella, jennifer marlowe, bailey quarters? well, a f/b friend posted a shorter clip of the below fun - here's a little more to chew on ...

enjoy this turkey day ~ 7 minute break
during today's thanksgiving celebration- join the crowd (over here)
"now the crowd is .. the crowd is, uh, curious but well-behaved"
"oh, the humanity!"
"... It's a helicopter, and it's coming this way. It's flying something behind it, I can't quite make it out, it's a large banner and it says, uh - Happy... Thaaaaanksss... giving! ... From ... W ... K ... R ... P!! What a sight, ladies and gentlemen, what a sight. The ‘copter seems to be circling the parking area now, I guess it's looking for a place to land. No! Something just came out of the back of the helicopter! It's, uh, a dark object, uh, Perhaps a skydiver plummeting to the earth from only two thousand feet in the air. A second, a third! there's no parachutes yet. Those can't be skydivers... I can't tell just yet what they are, but - Oh my God, they're turkeys!! Johnny, can you get this? Oh, they're crashing to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! Oh, this is just terrible! The crowd is running around pushing each other! Oh, my goodness! Oh, the humanity! People are running about! The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Honestly, folks I don't know how much longer... the crowd is running for their lives."

(see the full episode ~ 24+ min on
over here on hulu)

f|break: mid-week pre-holiday morn

gilligan's island ... my brother and i watched gilligan's island religiously after school when we were kids. over the weekend, one of my fave episodes - pass the vegetables please (over here) - came to mind while i was doing my CYCCYLn. it is an episode about gilligan finding experimental radioactive seeds ... carrots, spinach, sugar beets, artichokes, green beans, ... would love some of that sugar beets energy!

f|break: sunday morning

oh-two-one-three-four - send it to ZOOM! ... yesterday's fiber break with the electric company (over here) totally reminded me of bernadette and ZOOM!
bernadette and her arm thing ... my brother and i did that "arm thing", we loved singing the tune, and i remember thinking - "wow! there's an asian girl on t.v." and "zip codes can start with zero?!" who's bernadette and what was ZOOM all about when i was growing up (back in the 70's). (little crush on luis and david, and i wanted to jam with jay!)

    f|break: saturday morning

the electric company ... was a fun childhood t.v. show!!! and i was reminded of the show after seeing on a f/b person's post where she said "... one of those nights where i can't get to sleep so i have to dance around to this video. again. and again. and again. it's chill. don't worry about it. and yes, i posted this video a year ago. i'll post it as many times as i want. are you the posting police? halloweens of the past

costume me ... although i am not yet sure about what will be this year's costume, i am pondering yet ANOTHER variation on the theme of repurposing my cow costume, which was last worn in 2008/2007/2006 ... . (in other words, i'm lazy.) i do know i will not be repeating the 2009 nutty idea; i spent too much time 'splainin'.

    (repost from 10/31/09)

    highlighter
    (or tri-lighter)

    hottie
    ?!

that is sort of the concept.

we'll see how this plays out the rest of actual halloween day/night.

    enjoy the weekend!
    (2008 halloween offering? ... )

    (repost from 11/02/08)
halloween '08 cow costume repurposed ...

    ... for an enviro theme.
    (what else, eh?!)

"burp-utot-cow" persona ... had the dmv allowed a nice standard headshot (or maybe a costume-shot) ... my license would have be more fun. (side note: halloween = birthday)
CH4 methane molecules ... as fashioned by 1 black pom-pom with 4 white pom-poms and SEVERAL of them glued to white pipe cleaners just spewing from my "BURP" ...

"thirsty meg" (or maybe "lonely meg"?) ... l.a.g., dolled up as family guy's meg, was at first somewhat gentle, until she got a bit greedy.

and if you can't quite see them ... there are dingleberries with some methane molecules, also. (they look like little humps on the lower back.) here they are - hiding at night.
    geek cow.

    (repost from 10/31/08)
it COULD happen once a year ...
... if you don't pay attention to the little date above the little picture of your head. your driver license may be expired (or soon to expire - like really, really soon).

turns out ... my driver license expires today. (i discovered that unintentionally this past wednesday night at dinner.) that means, i'm celebrating a b-day ... this morning ... at the dmv ... in a machine+hand sewn cow costume (which has seen better days) that i swore i'd retire.

cow costume history ... goes like this ...
    • 1st time out = cow
    • 2nd time out = cow with more fancy cow stuff (a cow bell)
    • 3rd time out = "holy cow" ... cow with big glow-in-the-dark cross (no, not flames), a makeshift priest's collar, a rosary, a scapula, and at some point, a make shift halo. (i had a tiny bible, but without pockets (note to self - make at least one pocket), the bible was set aside). and yes, this was stuff worn at the same time.
    • 4th time out = "mad cow" ... a machine+hand sewn make-shift straight-jacket and those glasses with the crazy eyes hanging off of metal springs (another note to self - make an "escape" hole for each of your arms. turns out you can't eat dinner with your arms wrapped around toward your back. in fact, you can't do much drinking or anything else.)
... and THEN there was a hiatus, UNTIL NOW. hopefully someone will have a camera at work (yes, not only will i be in costume at the dmv this morn, i'll be in costume at work.) i am going to try to pull off ...

    "renewable resource energy" cow
    update:
    "bovine methane generator"

(yeah ... we'll see if the idea can be pulled off.

HINT: the carbon molecule is represented by a black pom-pom.
the hydroden molecule is represented by a white pom-pom.
and micheal's (the arts-crafts store) has my money. )

yesterday, i watched land of the lost with gadget man. a bit of a twist, i'd say (will ferrell style), to the saturday morning memories i had of chaka and the rest of the land of the lost crew. nevertheless ... (re)enjoy.

    (repost)

sleestak me! ... in preparation for anyone revisting the childhood saturday morning t.v. show favorite (back in the day sans remote channel changer-majiggy and there were dials on a t.v., so my brother and i took turns changing channels) that has been turned into a feature film, visit ...

    i love my friend kit.*

i decided yesterday that the activities i am taking on that seem to have a bit of a kit-inspired flair will be termed KitKick, aka k|kick.

    pronunciation: `kĭt´ kĭk (or `´kĭk)

multi-dimensional and multi-faceted as she always will be, here is kit as CYCCYL guru - clean your closet, change your life kit.

though kit lives many miles away, we have very recently been using the phone, facebook, texting, blogging, and emails to get (re)connected. meanwhile, both of us are well aware (and often reminded) that even without the encumbering computer/laptop/phone devices, we are connected - and we both know that everyone is connected in some form.

for now, here is just a quick post about my perception of my reality today as i am celebrating having kit in my life. here is the wild ride i've been on in just the past couple of weeks -
    • visiting with girlfriends ... i have been visiting with girlfriends where we've checked-in on/off throughout life - friendships that developed at very interesting times of my life. i've come to realize that life is just damn interesting all the time! who's next?! bring 'em on!
    • blogging and visiting blogs ... finally started to blog a bit. (goes without saying, i s'pose.) i am ALSO checking in on several blogs i've enjoyed in the past - and one i have loved from way back is spinning girl. (yippee, she's kinda blogging again. this creative post of hers made me a spinning girl convert!)granted, it's something as simple as posting this morning's animated clip with an awesome rahm depiction as a fiber break and blips of reposting old sh**. nevertheless, it's words on a screen. (yes, i'll be reposting former blog posts with the intent of filing the old blogs away.)

    • journal writing ... have pen and imagination, will write. i always carry two journals; now they are getting a little more action. one is a reporter's notebook for daily jots of $s spent, nifty quotes, restaurant tips, wine (thumbs up and thumbs down), and random ideas. the other journal is an "in-my-head" notebook where i tend to jot down some of the emotional/spiritual/intellectual thoughts coupled with notes from events and with notes about books/stories that somehow speak to me in a deeper sense.

    • ideas that have been a bit on-hold are being reawakened ... i'm a bit of an idea generator - silly, real, imaginative, boring, clever, nonsensical, creative, etc. - imagination is good. so a few that have been swirling around to k|kick-start ...
      • apprentern ... = apprentice + intern. really start blog on my thoughts about internships in memory of jengyee (over here and here).
      • zagat-ish blurbs about government air agencies ... this has been an idea to get me to visit the air agencies throughout california, which means that i would visit california cities here/there. vacation time.
      • philosophies around tolerance, ignorance, knowledge ... continue to evolve my thoughts and express my perspective about ignorance; time to get the race and epistemologies of ignorance book.
      • p2p (or peer-to-peer) at work ... refine p2p for use anywhere, a peer-based support system at work that focuses on mutual objectives of and a support system for meeting not only work-related performance expectations but also integrating one's values for achieving life objectives - part coaching, part sounding board, part mentoring, part buddy. have been doing this with a co-worker / friend since 2009; it's based on an internship program i had at my consulting practice.
      • POE's corner ... "people, organizations, events" - have a POE's corner up here in the bay area. back in 1995, i organized a "happy hour" style event (with a little twist to it) called POE's corner at the now-defunct Banzai Cantina in San Diego. VERY FUN!
      • (something to be determined) conversations ... i follow design observer tweets and saw a glass house conversation that i loved about having only one tool from which to choose - pencil, knife, hammer (conversation here). then another conversation on transparency or clarity over here. so i've wondered, who would be interested in such weekly conversations related to what topics - yet to be determined.
      • writing ... writing about - right. about ...? writing to write, for now. still swirling.
    • sharing business start-up ideas ... after having started a business practice back in 1994 (and putting it a bit in sleep-mode in 2007), i will be sharing my lessons learned, tips, and pitfalls with other friends who are starting a business or flirting with the idea of starting a business.

    • connecting friends ... a little like match-making, i am introducing friends of mine to each other to help move along each other's goals and objectives.
with whom are you celebrating life today?

p.s. k|kick will be part of my in-my-head journal.
