PR epi4 - nutkin'rs scores & recap links

(SPOILER)
#ProjectRunway ... well, the nutkin'rs chose, and i watched episode 4 of project runway. WTF?! i tallied the points, i re-tallied the points, and i added more bonus points because of the what-the-f**kness of episode 4. i know some nutkin'rs will want to check the math. based on the point system described below in more detail (NERD SNOOZE), have at it with the math.
APPLAUSE for the east coast player.
ENCOURAGEMENT for pho queen foodie

episode 4 results ... in addition to the normal winner and loser, two people voluntarily left (well, unless there were voices in their heads and that may not be voluntary), and episode 3's loser - raul - was brought back. so here is how the pack of designers look for heading into episode 5 - 11 (eleven) designers remaining.
heading into episode 5, these are the remaining designers

epi5 teaser has heidi introducing the client, nina garcia (raaawr ... love her!)  -
"you will be working in two teams to create a cohesive line of professional women's wear"
- and with 11 designers, one team has 6 fashiontestants, while the other is spared whomever was chosen last (or pulled a button, or whatever fixed-for-drama chance selection) part of the teaser is that team six haz sad. (AHHH...)

the episode 5 prediction survey will be posted by tuesday. new "PAIR 'EM UPs" will be posted by monday. so for now, here are specifics on scoring. starting off, nutkin'rs main predictions -
  • the overall winner
  • the overall final 3 (or 4)
reminder: after epi9, nutkin'rs can change their main picks
  • which person, given a pair of designers, would be auf'd first (before the other designer) - among these pairs.

the point system (original) ... the 3 main categories for gaining or losing points: (1) winner and loser, (2) final three (or four), and (3) pair 'em up. and for each episode, i come up with a BONUS category based on the episode preview.  here is the main point system for every episode -
  • START with 10 (ten) points
  • MINUS 1 (one) point if your predicted winner is auf'd; continue losing 1 point through episode 9
  • GAIN 1 (one) point if your predicted final 3 (incl your bonus designer) remain; continue gaining 1 point through episode 9
  • GAIN 1 (one) point each time you predicted correctly for PAIR 'EM UP
  • GAIN 1 (one) point if you predicted the episode winner
  • GAIN 1 (one) point if you predicted the episode loser
  • GAIN 2 (two) points (above and beyond) if you predicted the winner and lose
  • MINUS 3 (three) points if you predicted the reverse of winner and loser.
for epi 4's BONUS category, nutkin'rs predicted which two designers would voluntarily leave (also referred to as drama fugitives) prior to being judged on the runway (a 3rd designer could be chosen as an alternate). the epi 4 bonus point system as follows -
  • BONUS - GAIN 4 (four) points if you predicted both drama fugitives as your primary choices
  • BONUS - GAIN 2 (two) points if one of your primary drama fugitives and your bonus fugitive fled
  • BONUS - GAIN 1 (one) point if you predicted one of the drama fugitives fled.

points adjustments for episode 4 ... the point adjustments are final. epi 4 had a curve ball by bringing back last week's loser, raul. some nutkin'rs chose one of the drama fugitives (andrea or kooan) as their "loser", so i decided i'd give those nutkin'rs 0.5 point. i also gave one of the nutkin'r 0.5 point because her bonus drama fugitive (kooan) left. and in pair 'em up for the kooan | buffi pair, technically, kooan (who left first) auf'd himself, and buffi was formally auf'd. if kooan was predicted, 0.5 points; if buffi was predicted, 0.25 points. |and i gave everyone 0.5 points because freakin' raul came back.
overall, everyone scored points -
some more than others.
  • everyone's predicted winner remains, so no points lost
  • everyone's projected final 3/4 remains, so 1 point for everyone
  • everyone received 0.50 because raul came back.
  • no one predicted the pair of drama fugitives (even with the bonus), so no one gained 2 or 4 points. however, all nutkin'rs gained 1 point for choosing andrea over dmitry. when it came to the kooan & buffi pair, because kooan left first and buffi was formally auf'd, 0.5 points for kooan, 0.25 points for buffi. (don't worry, there will be other pair 'em ups.)
  • FINALLY - for winner and loser, one nutkin'r predicted winner AND loser, and this garners a total of 4 points (1 + 1 + 2). WOO-HOO!
recaps ... WOO-HOO! some recaps are up, so read on nutkin'rs!

PR nutkin game prep

#ProjectRunway ... as we prepped (over here) for heading into episode 3 of project runway, there were 14 (fourteen) remaining designers.

at the beginning episode 3, these were the remaining designers
see more about each at lifetime's PR site over here
getting ready for epi 4 and game ... this post is for shirlnutkin'rs playing the PR nutkin game - info about the point system, status on reward(s), and monikers - a reminder about designers' monikers given by other bloggers so players can become familiar with the designers.
  • row 1
    • 1 - alicia ... sapphic sister with the dreads
    • 2 - andrea ... professor cat lady
    • 4 - buffi ... buffi the taste slayer, betsey johnson on acid
    • 5 - christopher ... costello-lite (as in michael costello)
    • 6 - dmitry ... ballroom dancer
    • 7 - elena ... the other freaky chick
    • 8 - fabio ... freegan, dumpster hipster
  • row 2
    • 1 - gunnar ... evil gay, quentin w. sweetcrackers
    • 2 - kooan ... frokeman
    • 4 - melissa ... goth ashley-kate
    • 5 - nathan ... earnest dude in nerd glasses
    • 6 - raul ... (hmmm ... didn't catch a moniker for him)
    • 7 - sonjia ... tootie
    • 8 - ven ... jedi master of designers, rami of the season
PR nutkin game among shirlnutkin'rs ... a few shirlnutkin'rs have already chosen who they think will win, who will be the final 3 (or 4), who will have a meltdown (as described on lifetime's PR blog and on TLo's post over here), and "who will go first between person X and person Y" predictions. and before each episode, each shirlnutkin'rs choses who s/he thinks will win and will be AUF'd.

point system ... well, it's gonna look/read complicated, but it's not. it's just adding and subtracting. plus point(s) for choosing correctly, minus points if your winner is AUF'd before his/her time, and even more minor points if you reverse the order of who wins and loses on an episode. keeping in mind that i will do the math each week, here you go -
  • STARTING OUT: just because you are plahing, ADD TEN points
  • WINNER: if your winner is prematurely AUF'd, MINUS ONE point beginning the episode your winner is AUF'd and for each episode afterwards (until episode 10)
  • FINAL 3 (or 4): if your final three remains, ADD ONE point each episode they remain (and this includes your bonus person).
  • DRAMA FUGITIVES: if your primary two flee, ADD FOUR points. if a primary and your bonus flee, ADD TWO points. if one of your primary picks fled, ADD ONE point.
  • PAIR 'EM UP: if you chose correctly, ADD ONE point.
  • EACH EPISODE WINNER & LOSER: if you chose winner only, ADD ONE point. if you chose loser only, ADD ONE point. if you chose both correctly, ADD TWO points. if your winner and loser pair were reversed, MINUS THREE points.
reward(s) ... still not clear on what the reward(s) will be  an be from the PR lifetime shop. let's decide how we'll treat/shop for ourselves.

send in your survey picks ... get it outta the way - just make your picks. you can re-adjust after episode 9. sure that is six episodes away, but hey ... it's just a reality t.v. show on lifetime.

recaps ... meanwhile, don't forget to check out those who recap.

double-duty #improv

THANKS @madeuptheatre (on web, facebook, yelp) for our summertime sundays with you all and with where the fun kids are hangin' out!

MUT's class of advanced short form improvisers represent!
hello improvisers ... 12 improvisers taking MUT's advanced short form class over the next 8 weeks. and of the 12, 10 improvisers are taking MUT's advanced long form class (also over the next 8 weeks - back-to-back classes, kinda sorta). a fun mixin'-it-up with improvisers from different MUT classes.

show time ... as we've done before, our "graduation" for each class will be a performance for friends and family wanting to have a little evening fun out in fremont, off of auto mall parkway/osgood road. our performance dates are yet to be determined, therefore, stay tuned for a likely late july (or maybe early august) set of shows. and of course, we'll be performing at made up theatre where MUT's cast (and also class instructors) performs every SATURDAY.
meet MUT's Cast - BOBBY, SEAN, DUSTIN, BEN . . .  FUN GUYS!!!

learning us some games ... yes, there are four of us who were part of the previous short form class. in fact, we performed this past may 20 showcasing 8 games (among more than 30 games for which we had learned). during yesterday evening's first advanced short form class taught by bobby, we played 4 games ...

  • ACRONYM-MANIA - verbal wit using scene work ... when an acronym or some combination of letters are called out (e.g., radar, scuba, the, br), each player uses each letter in the order provided as the first letter of the words they speak in their opening sentence or expression. this continues until a new acronym/combo of letters are called out.
    • Tips - put yourself in an environment, avoid getting to caught up
  • HOSTAGE NEGOTIATIONS - a guessing game using listening, scene work, and endowment ... with 4 players, one person left the room. the remaining 3 players were giving a LOCATION, a DEMAND, and a WEAPON. at least one player would be a hostage. another player could be a hostage OR could be an accomplice. and the third player also could be a hostage, accomplice, OR a police officer. the idea is player 4 would come back as the hostage taker and guess his/her location, demand, and weapon. players provide hints to the hostage taker while making sure not to explicitly state where they were, what was wanted by the hostage taker, and what weapon was being wielded.
    • Tips - super annunciate your words, give progressive (rather than up-front obvious) hints
  • CHAIN MURDER - a guessing game using gibberish + pantomime ... in yesterday's class, we learned chain murder a little differently than in our previous class. yesterday evening - a LOCATION, an OCCUPATION, and a WEAPON were given to 3 players who served to gibber-mime to one person, who would guess the location, occupation, and weapon. meanwhile, in our previous class, we played it like the games clue and telephone. a LOCATION, an OCCUPATION, and a WEAPON were given to one person, while 3 people leave the room. one by one, the guessers come in and received from the one person the clues through pantomime and gibberish.
    • Tips - the more gibberish, the better
  • ONE EIGHTY FIVE - fast game/verbal wit ... "185 *BLANKS* walk into a bar, bartender says "We don't serve *BLANKS,* so the 185 *BLANKS* say something witty/PUNCHLINE.
    • Tips - think word association, stuff related to a bar, puns

making bold choices
and
committing!

f|back (oct '06): h.s. reunion time

five years have passed ... yes 5! it's high school reunion time! the last time, it was my 25th. do the math.

in 2006 ... i was amidst relo-ing from san diego to the bay area - literally in the midst of ... working in SD, flying up to meet the movers and unpack, going to the 25th reunion, then flying back down afterwards, and then driving back-up the next weekend with what little i had to get me through a work week and ... several goodbye brunches, lunches, happy hours, dinners, bopping around SD, and a few client meetings.

now in 2011 ... i JUST signed up (thanks to deedee!), so i'll once again keep my 5th-year reunion pact-ish with louis. (ha!)

(flashback post - repost from 10/15/2006 - "25th reunion: quick thoughts & recap" ... some aged hyperlinks have been removed)

amidst the move activities, if you note the sched,

yesterday eve (10/14)
was my 25th high school reunion!
[class pic1]

[... 25th h.s. reunion? ... feel free to do the math, if you're bored and have found some loose change in your sofa or in other people's cars ... you can buy me a b-day/housewarming gift - perhaps gift card(s)/certificates from ... oh, say ... target, cost plus, sur la table, west elm, pottery barn, flor, room and board, dwr, smart furniture ... or some new pillows? o.k. ... if not, that's alright.]

[class pic2]

(so for dave's benefit ... here we go!)

pics will be posted here/there over the coming week's posts
as i get pics
from friends + my own camera
[sally, deb, shirl, valerie]
recap from start ... louis picked me up @ 5 pm (the agreed upon time), and i was not yet ready (of course) but not ready 'cuz 1/2-way through the blow-drying of the hair (prior to the straightening), the dryer started smoking ... and smoke alarm went off. (nice touch) took requisite pic w/dapper-looking-louis! (nice shoes, dude!) left ~ 5:20 pm to find out we'd be in traffic (880 north on a sat eve?! wtf?) ... so we missed the pre-reunion drinks at the hotel bar ... but there was another 'special bar' for the reunion folks.
[shirl, laura, ariel]
to the sign-in table ... caught up with deb, pat, valerie, laura, ariel on our way **to** the bar ... as they were heading **to** the reunion area. also met jack, who was in our class, on the way to the sign-in. walked w/them all to reunion get our name tags. checked out all the other names (aka other attendees). drinks to the left + dinner/ballroom to the right. yeah ... we turned left!
[valerie, laura]
drink room ... small, intimate setting, conducive to chit-chat stuff. round 1 - on pat (thanks!) ... and the start of the --- "omg" ... "who's that?" ... "isn't that ___?" ... "s/he looks totally the same!" ... "did we go to school w/that person?"... "what a cute dress?" ... "what does his name tag say?" ... "they are still together?!" ... "i don't think s/he'll remember me." ... "i'm going to say hi to him/her" ... "i had a crush on ___." ... "i'd like to see ___." ... "how many reunions have you attended?" ... "are there any teachers here?" ... "vodka gimlet over, please" ... "don't leave me alone" ... "where's my camera?" ... "how many kids?!" ... "and the top 5 are ___" ...
[valerie, brian, robert, raelene]
ballroom for dinner & dance ... tables of 10 ... and there were 8-9 tables ?! ... at ours - louis, me, laura, ariel, valerie, deb, pat, raelene, robert + empty. great table and great conversation! cameras all over the place. prime rib or chicken piccata or wild mushroom ravioli. survey says - not so great on the p-rib. chick o.k. and ravioli is ravioli. chocolate cake dessert - enough of a thumbs up. yes, spouses attended, also.
[deb + spouse pat (aka camera man)]
music for dinner & dance ... hopefully SOMEONE has a pic of the DJs ... really. and they did play brick house (ugh!) and the rest of the late 70s/80s music. just an evening of ... name that tune.
[glenn, cathy, arier, shirl, sally, louis]

[class pic3]

o.k. - more pics and thoughts later ...

(flashback sequence over)

this saturday ...
it's 30th h.s. reunion time
(wow .. thirty!)

joining brain hibernation

a little blog-hush ... i'm joining my friend dorothy in a bit of a brain hibernation. well, i've kind of been blog quiet, anyway, so i guess i'm tagging along. dorothy shared a great quote over here, and here is the quote, also ...

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.

~ Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Psychiatrist

blog quiet ... from geek-perspective, prior to this post, there certainly has been a dip in my post frequency. and july?! what the heck happened in july? i dunno.

gonna pick up the pace ... nevertheless, we're heading into october, the start of the 4th quarter. so perhaps time for picking up the pace - end of year, birthday thing, 30th high school reunion coming up, holidays, fall weather, pop culture television, ... who knows from where the inspiration will come? well, it was nice to revisit gretchen rubin's 13 tips for actually getting some writing done.

meanwhile, as art shared at peet's this morning -

me - generation uhm ...

x? ... or baby boomer? i dunno. all i know is i was born in 1963, and the generation label i belong is dependent on which reference i choose.
  • tail-end baby boomer
  • front-end Gen X
  • sometimes mistaken for Gen Y
traits and characteristics ... from my random searches, traits and characteristics for each include -
  • tail-end baby boomer (over here) ... work-centric (commitment to workplace), independent (challenge status quo), goal-oriented (achievement-oriented & career-focused), competitive (hierarchical structure & rankism)
  • gen x (over here) ... individualistic (hands-off management preferred), technologically adept (electronic), flexible (adapt to change), value work/life balance (work to live)
  • gen y (over here) ... family-centric (work/life balance), achievement-oriented (meaningful work), team-oriented (inclusion & involvement), attention-craving (feedback & guidance)
why ponder generation-whatever this morning? ... writers block. public speaking block. this afternoon, i will be part of a multi-generation panel sharing 1 or 2 stories about our experiences with other generations. our story-share must be not more than 10-minutes. and

frankly, with many ideas swirling around about how to approach this topic, i'm not yet quite at a point where i have figured out my specific message - or messages. i thought i had a pretty good message some time monday afternoon. however, since then, i have thought about many experiences with baby boomers and millennials and that message has unraveled. so i've not quite woven my tale ... yet. (this morning's shower moment gave me some ideas!)

bias and expectations ... what i do know is that there are MANY ways to categorize a person and generation is straightforward. what year were you born? then of course, there is astrology - what signs are you? then there is family structure - where are you in the pecking order of siblings? then there is gender - man or woman? what's your myers-briggs? what was your major? so i'll get this out of the way -
  • 1963
  • scorpio / hare
  • oldest
  • girlnutkin
  • enfp
  • engineering
categories make it easier for us to put people in those figurative boxes. boxes make it easier for us to decide what to expect.

if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck,
looks like a duck, it must be a duck.

acceptance and discovery ... i recall the wisdom-ish of a former client almost 10-years older than me (who was into going to concerts) who told me back 2006 -
"power is something you take ... your status is not governed by some artificial chronological measure. if you believe you are a pseudo GenXer, then you are."
turns out, he's not a duck ... my bias and expectation plopped him into the pool of stay-at-home-boomers; however, my acceptance and discovery taught me that someone 10 years older can still hit the town and use napster. (his college daughter was using napster. like daughter, like father, i guess.) this man was getting ready to go to a snow patrol concert with his wife and who suggested i check out breaking benjamin because that was his next concert.

oh - and i saw the beastie boys open for madonna's first tour - the virgin tour - in 1985 at the civic center. gen X me.

my monday afternoon idea ... after taking a quick look at generic descriptions of baby boomers and gen x, my general outline looked something like the following -
  • introduction
  • share my vision statement (aka epiphany back in '94), which motivated me to go back to cubeopolis because why not share? what the heck! i have an audience (uhm ... this has nothing directly to do with the panel topic, but i'll figure out some nexus)
  • common denominator - numbers (everyone can relate to numbers!)
    • 30
    • 2.3
    • ~ 830 and counting
    • ~ 1,850 and counting
    • 17 and counting
then i figured i'd explain each number ...
  • my high school reunion this year
  • number of years until i turn 50
  • number of tweets (including retweets) since April 2010
  • number of blogs posts (among multiple blogs) that i've written since Jan 2006
  • the number if interns and mentees (all in GenY) who've taught me about life
then share a few quick anecdotes ...
  • while in the cubeopolis elevator, another person (boomer generation) said to me, "hey, you're not suppose to be texting. you're not in that generation."
  • while sitting in a "young professionals" meeting, there was discussion that people who were 40 years or older would likely not be interested in working with or for young professionals.
  • while talking with a friend about her new position as an executive in an energy company, she said, "i'm excited to be turning 50 this year. now the rest of the execs won't think i'm too young for this position."
  • at a movie theater with former interns, "are you old enough for a senior discount?"
then share my story ...
  • 17 (and counting) - much of what i have learned about technology, current pop culture, and a continued curiosity about life, i have learned from my experience with interns and with mentees in what has been characterized as gen Y.
  • maybe my story about jengyee and "no telling when i would have sat down ..."
  • maybe my story about creating an internship experience that considered gen Y attributes infused with cross-over generation attributes
  • maybe that i'm considered cougar - just kidding.
  • maybe something about pop culture
  • uhm ... now what? top 10 list? top 3 list? a new acronym?
TOO MUCH SPEW - shit! ... this can clearly be more than 10 minutes. okay - i'm still working on that "message" and how to frame one of they many stories and experiences i have had with gen Y.
take away exercise for closing ... although i know what my intro is with the numbers and anecdotes, i don't know the middle part - you know ... the meat of the story. however, here is what i came up with this morning during shower-time. similar to a "reverb 10" kind of approach, pose a prompt for people to ponder. reverb10 author prompts over here spurred my december daily blog posts listed here.

GENERATIONS ... We are surrounded by the wisdom of generations, but sometimes we lose sight of generations' gifts. What moment during the past 6 months might you have lost sight and had a bias and expectation of someone in a different generation? Consider within the next 6 months initiating an experience of acceptance and discovery of a generation's gift.
these go to 11.

weekend ritual ... peet's

(pic from peets.com)
my peet's trek is all about a spendy cup of coffee and some me time.

(repost from march 16, 2006, when i was still in SD)
Peet's in SD? ... simple math
i heart Peet's, and i have a calculator.

GIVEN:
A = number of Peet's coffeehouses in SD County
B = number of Peet's coffeehouses within 50 miles of future BA digs
C = 7.04E-04 Peet's per square miles of SD county

WHERE:
B = 62
C = A divided by (statistic for SD county)

SOLVE FOR: A*

*EXTRA CREDIT ESSAY QUESTION:
Why is B much greater than A?

. Correct answer for A = cup o' coffee or tea.
. Response to essay = upgrade to speciality coffee or rare tea
. Clever response to essay = pastry included

comments included ...
  • pjb ... 0.0007040 * 4261 = 2.9997. Is the 3/10000 of a Peet just over the county line?

  • sacto floyd ... Well, since we are talking about shirlsd, she would have assumed we'd use ASTM protocols for rounding. Thus, A would round to 3.00 (three sig figs), and Peet's would be in no danger of trespassing into the next county.

As for the larger question of why there are far fewer Peets in SD than in BA, I would guess that there are at least three reasons: (1) there are many more Peetniks in the BA, (2) the BA traffic jams require more Peets stores to keep the commuters awake, and (3) most importantly, cup holders have not yet caught on as a popular accessory for surfboards in SD. But give it time.

Peet's me. One just opened near me in Elk Grove. But we have traffic jams that are not as bad as in the BA, and there is no surfing to speak of in Sacto, so I would guess that we have somewhere between 3 and 62 Peets.

Do I get extra-extra points for that?

  • pjb ... To quote one of my favorite movies, "There is a fine line between clever and stupid." So I will try to stick with smart ass answers and avoid embarassing myself.

I am not aware of any Peet's here in the DC area and have never stepped foot in one. Are they just in California? Is a "peetnik" more BA, SD or Sacramento type person? What makes Peet's Peet's? Is there a kind of tight subculture that worhsips at the house of Peet's? Is shirlsd the high priestess of Peet's?

  • anon in NV ... We now have 1, yes 1 Peets in Reno - at, of all places, the airport. Of course after trying one there, before catching a 7am flight - it just didn't seem as strong as the lattes at the Peets around the corner from EPA in SF.

For the DC guy, in the areas that are not steeped with the great Peet's coffee fragrance, the poor souls can find Peet's coffee and beans at the ING (BRIGHT ORANGE) centers where they are trying to get us to save our cash in a European bank which also has insurance operations. Which is good, since we, in general, don't save cash in the US; we just spend it.

  • diva ... BOSTON has a Peet's! VISIT US!
