#improv love

@MadeUpTheatre @ENDGAMES_IMPROV @ImprovUtopia ... THANKS!

Two(-ish) weeks ago, January 31 marked the beginning of my 4th year continuing with improv, hanging with different improv communities, embracing (or not) improvisers' philosophies, mapping improv to other parts of my life, and drinking beer with fellow improvisers and friends. What have a learned? HAVE F@#%ING FUN!

Long Walk Reminiscing ...

Oh the improv memories of past (and more to come) ... from blog posts labeled improv, photos and events, photos STILL in Dropbox, and chats with friends, I figured it's a good time to reminisce a little about my unexpected love of improv and the improv community. While not everything is listed, here are a few highlights and tidbits -
- and I am looking forward to more memories being created in the coming years.

First Ever Class
On January 26, 2011, I signed up for a Made Up Theatre improv class, which was Made Up Theatre's (MUT's) very first class - Level A. This was after MUT's formal grand opening on January 2011. I came across a local newspaper which had an article about MUT offering classes. Since then, I have pretty much taken all their class offerings - Level A-C, then added Level D & E, then some rinse/repeat ... well, it's not about the naming of the levels but the content and teachings of the class. MUT has been my gateway to short form, long form, and games.

First Ever Show
June 11, 2011 was the grad show of MUT's Level B - and thus, my first time performing improv. With just six of us, the first part of our show was channel surfing and the second part was montage -
June 11, 2011 - after my first improv show
Birth of a Drinking Game ... Ask me about how the suggestion SOCKS became a drinking game. (Yes, really!)

- and then throughout the rest of 2011, I had 3 more grad shows in 2011. Given the MUT guys' background in games, in 2012 MUT offered game type fun - several of the games we learned listed in this blog post.
"A-B-C-B" says MUT Bobby!
yes, singing improv games!
Gimme music and singing ... I discovered that I loves me the music/singing based games. I may not be the best, but I have fun!

The Playground Improv Jam
Late last year, MUT started The Playground - a combo of games, short, and long form improv. The jam is hosted by MUT's owners. Although The Playground is wrapping up in mid-March, I was at a recent record attendance jam and then a fun get-to-know afterwards at a nearby coffee house.
at The Playground on Jan 23
The Playground has been a great way to meet other MUT students, to meet those new to MUT and in the area, and to contribute to building the improv community in the East Bay/South Bay.

Leadership Conference in Indianapolis
What does a leadership conference have to do with improv? Read on.

During my Level C MUT improv class, we were assigned to read Truth in Comedy: The Manual of Improvisation. Strewn throughout this book are tips for improvisers such as . . .
LISTEN ... be honest . connections cannot be avoided . respect choices made by others . accept and build . avoid preconceived notions . stay in the moment . nothing is ignored . there is no such thing as a mistake . welcome the silences . there is action in thought . reflect each other's ideas
. . . and it turns out, similar characteristics and philosophies - unrelated to improv - were strewn throughout a leadership course I was taking. In April 2011 I began a course - Foundations of Servant Leadership - with the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership (GCSL). For me, I saw how engaging the Servant-Leader philosophies was not too different from practices of an improviser.
LISTENING ... empathy . awareness . persuasion . conceptualization . foresight . stewardship . building community . commitment to the growth of people . self-awareness . changing the pyramid . developing your colleagues . coaching, not controlling . unleashing the energy and intelligence of others
My second course with GCSL - Applying Key Practices of Servant Leadership - is when I virtually met Jeff Miller, the GCSL instructor. In October 2012, we submitted a proposed conference presentation. Jeff and I would later present at GCSL's 2013 annual conference, our session titled - Who's a Servant-Leader Anyway? - in Indianapolis, Indiana.

getting ready to do a "STATUS" exercise
Improv Warm-Ups, Games, and Encouragement ... Our virgin voyage of the conference session was fun and a bit different with our incorporating improv warm-ups and games, while also layering the connection to servant-leader practices. In fact, after the presentation, I was slipped the following kind note and spent some time talking with Kim afterwards.

Note of encouragement from
Who's a Servant-Leader Anyway?
conference session attendee Kim.
And thanks to Jeff for his encouragement of pulling a conference session idea together.

The point is - improv feeds my servant-leader related interests - and go figure ... I can share and teach servant leadership through improv. And my love affair continues.

Saturday San Francisco Straddling
In September 2012, I began taking classes with EndGames Improv. After I received an email that year in July from MUT about not being chosen as part of their first student performance group, included in the email was -
"Another round of invitations will be sent out around November and every 3-4 months after that, so keep up with your improv, take classes (even outside of MUT), see shows, and you will have another shot to join the Performance Group."
So I did so, and I found EndGames.

Short version - I started taking classes with EndGames and have been straddling San Francisco as much as I can. Hmmm? Uhm ... Yeah, as much as I can. My lovely Saturday afternoons with Endgames began with Level I with Guillermo and James (of Fancy Ladies).

Our Level I show was in November 2012 at the Alcove Theater.
Debut and Closing at the Alcove Theater of
VAMPIRE PONY EXPRESS

... and thus became a hug fest with the EndGames community and so onto Level II with Guillermo on Saturday afternoons.

Late Night Commutes from San Francisco
The EndGames crack got to me. Along came the 7-10 PM Level III, IV and Advanced Scenework classes.  I remember thinking there would be no way I would stay in SF through 10 pm after working all day - having commuted from the East Bay for work. San Francisco is about 35-45 minutes away on a great, non-trafficky day or night. Half of our Level II class went on to Level III (so I totally wanted to continue, right?!). And then several of us continued with Level IV. And speaking of ...

So pretty much from Sept 2012 to Sept 2013, my routine had been late night classes in San Francisco and late night classes in the East Bay/Fremont. Why both? Well, turns out there are different approaches to and styles of improv. Why not learn about others, eh?

Meanwhile, I also have kept on with MUT fun at the same time I have taken EndGames' classes.
Troupe 2013 fun.
Right now, I am part of the MUT Winter 2014 cycle of troupe, which ends in March with another cycle of troupe starting up in ~April.

Although I am not currently taking classes with EndGames (as they sell out quite fast!), that will change. For now I keep on straddling when I can, especially with improv workshops that EndGames offers, with the most recent being the trifecta with Craig Uhlir and Katie Rich's "Getting Out of Your Head" and "Harold". Oh - and then there are their  is their Thursday Showcase and jam afterwards, for which I finally got my fix a few Thursdays ago with folks I have met through EndGames and MUT.

Rogue Fun
At some point in early 2013, I was asked if I'd be interested in being a guest improvisor at a reunion-ish show of 4 other improvisers in the San Jose area who were part of a troupe called Party Fowl. They asked me if I knew other folks that would be interested. The result? My friend Dean and I joined as guest improvisors.
Dean and I - UkuleMe
(March 2013)
Three folks - Sean, Stephanie, Mike - that I met in a MUT class in late 2012 were part of a larger improv group, Party Fowl, in the South Bay/San Jose area. In March, we joined Party Fowl's Workshow, which included standup comedians, games, short form improv, and a little bit of jamming.

We all continued to practice weekly toward forming a team called Illegitimate Improv with the intent of performing short and long form improv. While short-lived, we had fun.

Since then, to keep on hanging out with Dean and get my South Bay fix, I've been hanging with other folks who meet up - YES! more straddling the Bay Area. Similarly inclined, we practice weekly primarily toward long form improv, while keeping sprinkles of short form improv in the pool.

Camp Improv Utopia
Classes and shows aside, in May 2013, I experienced my first Camp Improv Utopia. 2012 was sold out by the time I registered in early 2012. Off of the wait list for 2013, I camped with ~ 100 improvisers (and a few virgin improvisers). Held during the Memorial Day weekend, food (tasty!), lodging, workshops, relaxing moments, and fun are all included.

at Camp Ocean Pines, Cambria, CA
2014? Yup, I am going again. I'm looking forward to meeting new people, reconnecting with those I met last year, and just seeing what happens.

Summing up My Improv Lovin'
As I wrote about in Anthrocubeology's Still Talking? Time to Create - pulling from Jimmy Carrane's blog post Stop waiting and start creating -

"The only power you have is the ability to create.
No person or institution can take that away from you,
even if you think so."

oh 2014 @SFSketchfest

I spent my Christmas money ... BEFORE I got Christmas money, and I have no regrets.

Now I am trying to figure out how I am going to spend my tax refund before I get a refund (I hope), for other shows. RIGHT?! ... Time to reminisce about 2012, wonder about 2013, and share how I spent my Sunday morning, December 15, rapid-firing ticket purchases.

2012 SF Sketchfest

Fun times with my friend Joel, aka Gadgetman, for whom I gifted him tickets. We saw The Nerdist Podcast - hosted by Chris Hardwick with Matt Mira - and they signed the TARDIS scarf I got Joel.
more about this over here
The podcast special guest was Dan Harmon - a VERY DRUNK Dan Harmon. (Uhm ... that podcast did NOT air, but it was fun enough.)

On the morning after, I looked like this - GOOD TIMES! Memorialized via xojane's morning faces, with other participants' pictures over here!
more about this over here

2014 SF Sketchfest

In 2013, I  went to several shows; however, for whatever reason, I didn't do a blog post. Oh well. So what's up for the next couple of weeks? Here we go in no special order ...
... and are there other shows I want to see? Yes. So how do I choose among where my greens go? -

Shows? Shoes? Parking?
Retail therapy hat shopping?
SF food truck stuff?
Sundries/Hygiene products?
More shows?

(I should see Rob Corddry, right?!)

the oracle on #dating (?)

New Year with the Oracle ... Since 2000, I have known the Oracle.  "Congrats, Oh Mighty Oracle, for your MBA-ness!"

For more than a decade, the Oracle has provided intellectual banter, often about business development, yet regularly relating to professional and personal development. Past mouth-spew-wisdom has been featured in a previous post over here.

Oracle Favorites

A few of my fave wisdom words include -
  • right is always right; not simply when it's obvious or convenient.
  • no one wins a race to the moral bottom.
  • you are the sole architect of your fortune ... and misfortune.
  • creativity is intrinsically hard to manage, but there is an essential paradox whereby enough process must be introduced so that creativity is balanced by a certain level of accountability.

Economics and On-Line Dating

Earlier this week, we caught up on what's what, including chats about holiday activities, family, work, etc. Virtual "high five" for the Oracle's MBA (and more free time)!

Because I turned 50 this past year, I mentioned that I have agreed to try an on-line dating site - ourtime.com - that markets to those 50 years and older. (OH! THE REALITY OF LIFE!) I have yet to post a profile.

Immediately, the Oracle mentioned a Bloomberg Surveillance clip came to mind - a clip of a Stanford professor interviewed on Bloomberg TV over here on How Economics Can Help Find Love Online. Paul Oyer wrote a book - Everything I Ever Needed to Know About Economics I Learned from Online Dating - with an overview over here and a companion video (below).

enjoy this clip from Stanford Business (over here)

y'know ... i'm just thinking
it's about fish in a barrel -
being a truthful fish in a barrel
(is that an economics thing?)

my three words for 2014

shirlnutkin ponders
(from Archie McFee)
THANKS @chrisbrogan ... Now in my third year for three words - explained over here in Chris Brogan's post, my three words for 2014 are -
  • Shift
  • Fingertips
  • Practice

SHIFT

I shift into gear.

A carry-over from 2013, shift is about recognizing and creating those events and activities that bring meaningful change not only to my big story/vision but also to the big story/vision of those around me. (Added for 2014 is the element of providing the support and framework for others to shift.)

So far, for my endeavors, this includes my commitment to -

FINGERTIPS

My fingertips are always active.

OH THE PLACES my fingertips have been and will go! There are many activities accomplished by fingertips - some I have engaged and others I've yet to discover. Keeping my fingertips active dovetails with my many areas of interest.

Deservedly so, fingertips, for me, includes/will include (... strap in) - writing, blogging, journaling, playing the ukulele, occasional refreshers at the piano, cartooning, improvising (and making more out of object work), wrangling hair products, less "story-duck-mouth" motions (... tip of the hat to my friend andy), more thumbs up, cooking, tapas eating, home decorating, sign language, collaging (... tip of the hat to my friend theresa), and ... those activities that contribute to shifts.

PRACTICE

I engage daily practices.

As an evolution of one of my 2013 three words - deliberate - practice is inspired by the following -
- and to a great extent, practice is/will be tied to those "shifts" and "fingertips" - the practice of serving as a peer-group leader will include the daily checking-in on the Google+ Community that is formed, the practice of learning more chords to learn more songs on the ukulele, the practice of tiny habits toward a more health lifestyle, etc.

MY THREE WORDS OF THE PAST YEARS

My three words for 2012 -
  • Believe
  • Foresight
  • Expression
My three words for 2013 -
  • Deliberate
  • Expressive
  • Shift
as Chris shared in 2013 -
"The three words are a shorthand representation of your bigger story. It’s kind of like how an icon isn’t the software program. It’s just a way for you to mentally access all the work you’re doing."

What three words -
or maybe it's more words or less words
- reflect you?

oh @GlobalNiche ...

@AnastasiaAshaman @TaraAgacayak @zibbyz ... thanks for all the GlobalNiche lovin'. Just taking a little time out this Sunday to say -

Puffy Heart!

GlobalNiche fix ... Go figure, I realize in addition to GlobalNiche's website, another great place to get my GlobalNiche fix on-the-run is at GN's Pinterest. (D'OH!)

http://www.pinterest.com/globalniche/

2014 venture with GlobalNiche ... I am excited that 2014 brings about the opportunity to serve GlobalNiche as a peer-group leader for those who are looking to buddy-up with others in the Udemy GlobalNiche SUM-it UP program.

As I am getting prepared, I am looking to help people -
  • discovering ... for articulating one's vision and goals through self-reflection;
  • branding ... one's self for professional (and personal) development endeavors;
  • navigating ... with one's off-line collaboration efforts, considering and learning about on-line tools and resources, and
  • connecting ... with others who can support one's vision & goals
- basically - discovering and wrangling one's potential on- AND off-line endeavors.

More eyeball to eyeball moments ...

In addition to the virtual world of GlobalNiche -
Google Hangout with Silvana and Anastasia
... and I am actually connected via my phone.

- I look forward to those moments where we get to meet-up in person -

With Anastasia at Gioia Pizzeria in San Francisco

congrats @LeadByGrace and ...

thanks Kelly ... for the little shout-out to shirlnutkin* in your first post - And So It Begins, on your blog Transformation - where you share your experiences with facing and overcoming life's curve balls on Parenting, Friendship, Fitness, and Faith.

transformation ... kelly's blog (twitter) is her kick-off to kicking-ass (in that awesome way), as she usually does!

mind you, kelly is a single mom of three kids; she balances and maneuvers parenting, working (full-time), continuous learning, and volunteering ... and doing all with and by grace.

when a mutual friend (who had worked with kelly for about a decade) learned that kelly started a blog, he commented -
"Pretty gutsy of Kelly. She is amazingly productive and driven, and making it public is impressive."
- and rightfully so.

when kelly and i met ... kelly had already begun her transformation. i met her in 2004, after she had a gastric bypass. at the time, she had one child.  if i recall correctly, one of my energy project developers was selling a power plant to her company. we were both on the environmental-related side of the transaction. more notably, though, we both learned early-on about our mutual perspectives, philosophies, and values in life. we have continued to keep in touch throughout the years and pick-up very quickly from where we left off.

about kelly as she shares her journey ... in kelly's second post - Look Back to Move Forward - she shares her life's events as she continues her transformation, beginning in 2003.

the short version -  starting out at a weight of 360 pounds, kelly made a mindful decision to have a gastric bypass in late 2003. since then, she has been fluctuating around 190 pounds. her goal is 165 pounds. and while she doesn't mention it in her second post, i know she works full-time, participates and volunteers for many activities, is faith-based, and understands the value of community.

in kelly's words - excerpts from her second post ...
"I stood up from a meeting and the chair came with me... voluptuous thighs, the chair was suspended 6 inches off the ground ... room was full of co-workers ... At 360 pounds ... I was no longer willing to tolerate being overweight."
"I had tried every fad diet out there ... the social stigma ... obesity is a form of socially accepted discrimination ... successful weight loss is further complicated by potential physical restrictions or related comorbidity health issues."
"Food was my coping mechanism; it had been my entire life. In 2003 ... made the decision to have a gastric bypass ... implementing the life-style change ... manage life’s curve-balls so food is used for its intended purpose in lieu of coping... make the conscious decision to use a healthy tool instead."
"My goal in November of 2003 was to weigh 200 pounds and maintain that weight within 5% ... loss of 160 pounds ... buy a scale from the store as it only measured up to 300 pounds ... reached my goal, ten years and two children later I have maintained my weight within the 5%."
"The lowest weight I have achieved in the past 10 years was 175 pounds ... felt more in control and successful (i.e. work, personal goals, etc.) ... I have hovered more in the 190 pound range ... goal ... achieve and maintain my (doctor approved) goal of 165 pounds."

- and finally, her closing statement of her second post -

"Time for a lasting change
and that is exactly what I am going to do"

*admittedly, it's Kelly's little mention
that re-ignited shirlnutkin-ness
from its hibernation.

when #AARP meets #birthday #dating

do the math ... last year when my friend pho queen was giving me dating advice, i declared in august 2012 that I would be 49 years old.

(SQUEE)
yes, it's an
appropriate response.

fifty ... yes, this year (and in fact, this month) i am turning 50 years old.

  • i have been to my 30th high school reunion.
  • i am at the AARP target market age.
  • i am generally good-to-go with 80s trivia (and maybe even some 70s trivia given the 13" television set my brother and i adored and the teenage magazines i LOVED!).
  • i saw madonna's the virgin tour when i was in college, for which i also experienced the beastie boys for the first time.
    • and while i am at it, i stared up at andy bell's (of erasure) red-costumey-leather-jockstrap-thing from the floor of san francisco's I-Beam when concerts were under $15. (fun time during them I-Beam nights!)
  • my genes (and moisturizer) keep me looking youthful.
  • i definitely have to stretch more than before, and whether it really helps, i take a multivitamin religiously.
  • i had to REALLY think about whether it was a good idea to hook-up for a two-night stand with a younger guy - because making bad dating decisions is a timeless, ageless thing - aka 1503 ...  remember this, piragua?
july 8, 2010
1503.
  • i read (and have read) dr. christiane northup's women health writings since i was told my eggs would start "rotting" (aka being less viable).
  • i appreciate (for the most part) when other people SQUEE when they learn i'm turning 50.
  • i thank bouncers and age-checkers for not carding me.
  • and finally, i know how to spell perimenapaws perimenapause perimenopause.

back to the dating thing ... last year pho queen (who is approaching mid-30s in a few years) had silver-lining advice for dating older and dating younger men.

this year, pho queen and i still talk about dating, sex and the city episodes, old school ways of meeting guys, and scary-shitty on-line dating. (yes, this means she and i are single.) now piragua (a mutual friend, also single, also in her 30s) has posed the question -

"have you signed up for our time?"
~ piragua

fuck. shit.
i'm turning 50.
