got grits?

i'm there(!) ... and that means i will drive up to the berkeley/oakland area and meet-up with buds for breakfast for classic catch-up and laugh-uproariously memories. (and we laugh and story tell over some crazy, random, stream-of-consciousness-connect-the-dots kind of chatter like over here!) the following places are three go-to breakfast places for grits and breakfast buddy chatter. in addition to grits, all three places have tasty offerings for breakfast and brunch!

rudy's can't fail cafe ... located in emeryville on the corner of hollis and park, it serves up grits as a side order or a breakfast entree (on weekends only - hot grits, cheese, green onions, and bacon). (more about rudy's can't fail cafe, on yelp, and on urbanspoon), and it is the breakfast buds choice place for laughing uproariously.

900 grayson ... located in berkeley on the corner of 7th and grayson, it serves up carolina cheese grits as a hearty side order. (closed on sundays, more about 900 grayson and more on yelp)
today was a mild collection of chuckles with gadgetman, his chicken & waffles, my grits, and me. and breakfast food pic fun included new little toys (thanks gadgetman!) - little cell phone gummy-stick-on camera filters for the starburst and wide angle effects (from photojojo over here).

lois the pie queen ... located in oakland, it's on the corner of 60th and genoa and just kind of kitty corner to adeline street. (more about lois the pie queen on yelp). lois the pie queen serves up grits as a side and biscuits that we affectionately call "crack biscuits" - VERY tasty and addictive!

movember, moustaches, and ...

men's health ... although this year i caught-up with this effort mid-stream in november, it's a must share. Movember is - as stated on its website -
"The 'Mo', slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Each Movember we challenge men to change their appearance and the face of men's health by growing a moustache. The moustache is our ribbon, the means by which we raise awareness and funds for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, our commitment is to grow a moustache for 30 days. Funds raised benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG. "
well, my friend has a friend in the U.K. who is participating, and there are many others. i have a college buddy who has prostate cancer. i care about him.

do care enough to donate over here

f|break: saturday morning

finally finding my amex + ticketmaster =

sade tickets ... i will be at the aug 25 show in san jose at the hp pavilion.
  • yesterday's thing - at coffee yesterday afternoon, mister-boy-working-at-specialty's asked what the acronyn "sayd" on my baseball cap meant. i told him it was a group with a female lead singer named sade. he asked if they were popular. as i started explaining, he interrupted me and asked if it was some sort of 80s band. solution? just show him the sade website. he then asked, "is that her?"

  • pre-sale amex thing - i learned about the amex presales and the "costs-as-much-as-two-pairs-of-fluevogs" VIP ticket package.

  • lesson learned thing - find a new memorable super-secret hiding place. i spent literally HOURS (last night and this morning at 4:AM-ish) looking for my amex card for presale tix so it could VIP myself.

  • time passes and shit happens thing - in between the time when a VIP hospitality package was available STILL available yesterday to the time i found the super-secret amex card hiding place this morning, said VIP package NO LONGER available. (note to self: snag a package at the san diego show.)

good thing...

i purchased tickets this morning.

a second chance season ...

the fashion show ultimate collection ... season 2 of bravo's the fashion show is on my dvr (for now). part of yesterday's weekday holiday has been spent catching up on my dvr'd shows. because i don't yet know who in cubeopolis is watching the fashion show, i am resorting to reading a few blogs to get my chatter-in-my-head-chatting. so here is how episode 1 shook out ...
  • david dust ... always THE clever-est and funnest read for recaps. (click the image to the right for dust's the fashion show ultimate collection posts) just want episode 1 - over here.
    • almost the closing statement - "Calvin will stick around to yell at sewing machines and mangle the English language for at least another week."

  • project rungay ... tom and lorenzo are quite prolific with their commentaries and insights. (click the image to the right for TLo's the fashion show ultimate collection posts) just want the epi 1 related posts - over here, and check out their meet the designer. i LOVED seeing F/M/K in the post. LOVED. IT.
    • on iman - "Just remember to add "or I will KILL you." to the end of every one of her sentences and it all falls into place."

  • racked ... my first time to check out racked. (click the image to the right for racked's the fashion show ultimate collection posts) i found this site because i was wondering "what the hell is up with calvin's two watches - one on each wrist?!" and had to google. the result? racked. the epi 1 top 10 list was a fun read.
    • closing sentiment - "End scene. Calvin sucks."
until the next dvr'd episode ...

hipmtfn (ttAR): on 16 reasons to ...

... unsubscribe to tyler's advanced riskology site ... just as i have done so other mornings (albeit before my commute to cubeopolis and after my morning exercise), this morning - a holiday from work - was no different. tyler's recent post is 16 reasons to unsubscribe from this site (click article title to read on tyler's site).

i saw the title pop up on my piece of sh**- i've dropped it one too many times blackberry and became immediately excited because i was pretty certain - sight unread - i would be forwarding his post to others. (check! done.)

and just this morning, a friend called to share her fab and not-so-fab life happens (and work can suck) experiences. part of our call was her sharing that she may quit something for which she is very passionate. immediately, october's magic 8-ball post came to mind and here's why - when i 8-balled pho queen's question, it was an excuse to share with her several websites whose content i felt would (re)inspire and resonate with her.

8-ball for my friend this morning (who is doing a little retail therapy) ... i believe that within the seven items i mentioned in my comment to tyler, at least a few will (re)inspire and resonate with her. so again, absent the actual magic 8 ball, the virtual magic 8 ball says ...

QUESTION POSED
and
ANSWERED:
and now a little refresher from tyler's
16 reasons to unsubscribe to this site
post - here are the subset of 7 from the set of 16
for my retail-therapying-friend ...
  • 4. You do not owe it to anyone to do work that you hate. When you work on things that don’t inspire you, you do a poor job. It’s better to quit finding excuses to keep doing it so that you can move on to something better and let someone else that actually cares take over.

  • 6. Every business should do what’s right for humanity before what’s right for its shareholders. I don’t know how we got to the point where we have to choose between what’s right and what makes money, but I, for one, am interested in reversing that process in my own little way.

  • 8. Governments should keep their laws off of my body (and anyone else’s). Don’t tell me what I have to put in or on my body to stay safe and don’t tell anyone else what kind of life-changing decisions they have to make because you have an opinion on the matter.

  • 10. If we let the earth fix itself, it will do so by eliminating us. No, we don’t have to clean up our mess. Mother Nature will do it for us, but we won’t like her solution.

  • 13. The world does not need me to save it from itself. It needs me to help where I can and get out of the way when I don’t know what I’m doing.

  • 14. The water you drink, food you eat, and air you breathe should never be allowed to be owned by a private party. We can trade what is rightfully ours for money and simplicity, but we won’t like what we get in return.

  • 15. A person is happiest when they’re doing meaningful work, not when they’re relaxing. The idea that happiness is sitting on a beach drinking a margarita is mostly a myth.
and for my retail-therapying-friend, i say to her ..."i appreciate the meaningful work that you do(!), and, if, for some reason, you feel you want to quit, let me ask you please to check out tmf's the lost art of quitting and tmf's the smart ass guide to dealing with dream zappers, and consider what she poses, "If something doesn’t make sense for us, then retreating once we’ve started isn’t a sign of flightiness, unreliability or commitment phobia; it’s a sign of wisdom."

until the next AR moment ...
