oh @healthmonth

reaping fruit early on!

the month of june has started off nicely
with 5 pieces of fruit!

my rules ... i am going back to basics with a few classic rules, a few dialed back, and a few rules i consider a tad bit challenging.

hoping my other
team CDWL (at eco dork inn) members
are playing in june!

@healthmonth for july

my #healthmonth themes include ... increasing veggies, fruits, seafood ... more body movement and relaxation ('cuz my reward is some personal health device for which i've been leaning toward fitbit, however, now i'm considering fuelband) ... new rules involving more anthrocubeology ... and classic rules that still are not quite habits for me. and big THANKS to the founders of Team CDWL@edi and our evolving team members for keeping it real!

i'm gonna have a weekend get-away
after i rock july's health month

it's not about the number of rules ... although the 24 rules below that i have chosen may look like too much, in fact, i've been chipping away at them for several months ...

happy dance ... using tiny habits, accountability partners, and a little girl squirrel celebratory moments keeps me chugging along! several rules are listed to remind me of the awesomeness of what i'm working on (okay, a little self-congratulatory, and why not?!). also, several "don't" rules (aka "allow ...") are listed as a reminder for the summer month of barbecue, summer gatherings, and lazy days after work.

and most of all, i appreciate the support
of other health month players -
offering fruit, encouragement, and tips!

3 tiny habits: day 1

soon to be cleaned water glass next to eyebomb'd phone.
fun with @bjfogg for my tiny habits one-week experience. day 1 (monday) - victory for all 3 tiny habits! (a quick overview of the "how to" for tiny habits from an article over here)

my tiny habits ... on sunday, i mentioned about my participating in 3 tiny habits over here. the duration engaging the tiny habits is from monday - friday.  my 3 tiny habits are pretty tiny, indeed (thanks much to the guidance fogg provides).
  • after i sit down in my office chair, i will place my water glass next to my phone.
  • after i park my car at home, i will clean out one thing from my car.
  • after i come home after working, i will place my work bag near my stool.
... and after receiving bj fogg's email asking 2 simple questions (needing only yes or now responses), i shared in my first daily check-in -
  • whether i did my tiny habits today -  "yyy" (aka yes, yes, yes)
  • whether i intend to do them tomorrow - "yes, definitely! this is fun. i am seeing these "anchors" in my life, and it's neat! meanwhile, i'll continue with my 3 tiny habits!"
... and by anchors, they are essentially solid habits i already do.

health month upcoming coupling ... and because of this, i can see how i will definitely benefit from applying this to the health month rules i am choosing for february's health month. in fact, i have not been consistent in meeting my "drink XX glasses of water a week" rule. well, guess why i decided to make one of my week's tiny habit of having my water glass next to my office telephone?

got anchor?
get habit!

#healthmonth - starting 2012

@healthmonth ... with team CDWL at edi over here is still up and running with a mix of folks that varies monthly.

a year in review ... overall, looking back at my months and rules i've chosen, habits have formed and a few i'm continuing to develop. i've had my share of being consistent and not so consistent with my health month activities. i missed one month of not registering our team; lesson learned! and i didn't finish out a several months, but that's okay. overall, the monthly self-awareness (and no-guilt) and support from my team members and
others also playing with health month is great.

visit health month
what's health month? ... it's easy and fun and up to you to choose your habit-forming rules. try it out over here for free and just let me know if you're interested in giving it a whirl; here's a bit more about the origin and how to play.

habits ... it has been nice to have habits formed (and forming) through 2011. i like the motivation tidbits that health month's buster benson shared as january 2012 approach - A Compact Guide to Creating the Fitness Habit, by Leo Babauta and 3 Tiny Habits, by BJ Fogg. (i will be signing up for 3 tiny habits!) i've tried a variety of health month rules, as well as maintaining a few familiar rules every month. through 2011, i have tried out a rules in all categories - diet, exercise, mental - and at different frequencies and goals. overall, my 2011 has resulted in ...
  • modified and/or reduced my intake of ... dairy, alcohol, pasta, fried foods, red meat, snacks, white rice (yes, really!), soda.
  • increased my activities of ... tracking meals, eating fruits, eating greens, eating local foods, bringing lunch to work, cooking dinner, eating organic, being social, drinking enough water, exercising, meditating, eating more nuts-beans-seeds, eating whole grains.
  • tried out or revisited a few things here and there that sometimes sticks (or not so much sticks) ... eating bright vegetables, yoga (iyengar), limiting gluten, limiting processed food, tracking dreams.

starting out for 2012 ... for the beginning of the year, i decided to go with several familiar rules at achievable levels, especially because i welcomed 2012 with sniffles and antibiotics. there are a few "stretch" rules, but to cheer myself on, i kept extreme rules limited for january. i'll ramp up in february.

coupling health month with my 3 words ... for february, i will be adding some custom rules to dovetail with some of my 3 words for 2012 activities.

thank you, buster,
for health month!

h|month-terview (march '11): preview questions ...

#healthmonth ... we are continuing our get-to-know team CDWL@edi (aka Caloric Dolls Who Link at eco dork inn - an anagram - formed in december over here) through h|month-terview - a faux-interview of sorts, albeit truthful responses.

(SIDE NOTE: this our our team's add-on-fun, inspired by healthmonth and is NOT formally part of the on-line healthmonth experience. but hey! spurring on creativity is a good thing, too!)

previous h|month-terviews ... visit the past month's interview questions for january (based on the inside the actor's studio questions) and february (from my life, my card questions of a credit card company), and see some team members' responses for january and for february.

aigd's 20 questions ... this month's interview is poached from based on a 2006 american institute of graphic designers article of 20 questions, which i answered in 2006 over here. (i'll be (re)answering the questions.) want to know a little more about aigd? here is a little about them over here and an excerpt from their page -
"AIGA supports the interests of professionals, educators and students who are engaged in the process of designing, regardless of where they are in the arc of their careers. The disciplines represented in the profession range from book and type design through the traditional communication design disciplines to the newer disciplines of interaction design, experience design and motion graphics. In addition, AIGA supports the interests of those involved in designing from other disciplines, professions and business who share designers’ commitment to advancing understanding of the value of design."
and there is an SF bay area aiga chapter with various events, including the popular design lecture series and d.talks.
[OPTIONAL] share an image ... in addition to your health month image/pic that will be part of your h|month-terview post, feel free to share an image of a symbol sign - something that you may see everyday or something that surprised you. (yes, i'm assuming you have a camera phone or eye-fi for your camera.)

health month '11 primer

what (or where) is health month?
health month is an on-line healthy-habits and social game over at healthmonth.com. it is described by creator health month's buster benson in the origin story (over here) and about how to play (over here). here is my little post (over here) on being part of the monthly fun. individually or as part of a team, health month can and will make a difference! ask anyone who has been part of it for even 3 days.

where can one check it out?
there are four site where one can check out the fun -
who is part of shirlnutkin's team CDWL@edi?
first of all, our team name is an anagram for 2 rules that the founders shared in our first month - allow alcoholic drinks and cook dinner.
Team CDWL@edi, formed in 12/03/2010,
with carlito as our godfather.

second of all, to actually chose our team picture - well, that's another story. it involved the magic 8-ball and a total of four picture options (over here) from which to choose.  and third of all, we are simply a group of friends and friends of friends coming together.  in december, there were 3 of us. january brought two more members. and in february, we are rounding out with 7 members - progressing to encourage others to have fun with us!
  • our mission - eat more plants and grains. eat less meat and carbs. have more fun. watch less tv. have fun with anagrams. (and boink?)
  • requirements to be on team CDWL@edo -
    • DAILY DO smile at least to one stranger.
    • DAILY DON’T roll your eyes.

you can go solo, form your own team, or if you want to join team CDWL@edi, keep it short to let me know via email, facebook, twitter, or as a comment on this blog post, and then i'll bring it to the founders to noodle on it. (wink.) if you want, you also can ask to be invited.

    health month fun - a work-in-progress
with my nutshell monthlies, it is apparent that health month fun can (and will) be regularly posted. so a much easier way to share this will be in on this page. related posts have a label for health month.

it's that time of the month ...

#healthmonth ... lock and load your rules (and any exceptions) for march. there are eleven new rules and a rules wizard. remember you have until march 1 before midnight to load up your rules. they will be locked in by march 2.

team CDWL@edi ... we are doing great. however, i see we all have some catching up to do - i had 3 days in the queue. checked that off my list this morning.

new team members interested ... if you know anyone interested in joining team CDWL@edi, make sure to let me know so i can approve him/her. and as a reminder, our team is over here, and we have DAILY DO and DAILY DON'T requirements. and they can join health month over here.

11 new rules for march ... have you checked out the new rules? i know there are some that several team CDWL@edi may enjoy! of the 11, the several that come to mind -
    • do yoga
    • stretch
    • do your household chores
    • walk at least x steps a day
    • track your spending
and a few more rules from the 4-hour body slow carb diet and the no s diet.
other suggestions ... perhaps someone should simply suggest to buster -
    do cross fit WOD
    - as a rule, eh?! (yes, i'm talking to smiles and j-ro - wink! - if you've not yet done so.) here is the uservoice forums/health month idea tracker to do so.

rollover your rules from february, aka rules wizard ...
and i believe everyone has seen this already. buster added a feature to import your last month's rules. when i used it earlier last week, the notes and exceptions had not rolled-over consistently; some notes were mixed up under other rules. nevertheless, a GREAT update to healtlh month!
see you in march team CDWL@edi,
and maybe we'll have some new team players!

side note: i've been getting requests from health month'rs to join team CDWL@edi or
simply for sponsorship. and for some, they are giving me lives and fruit
AND asking for sponsorship. how about you all? getting asked, also?

(SIDE NOTE: this our our team's add-on-fun, inspired by healthmonth and is NOT formally part of the on-line healthmonth experience. but hey! spurring on creativity is a good thing, too!)

previous h|month-terview: hiccups (part 1), shirlnutkin, specgirl (part 1), pho queen, smiles

from the remaining mash-up james lipton + bernard pivot questions ...
    • If you were reincarnated as some other plant or animal, what would it be? A seal.
    • If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Everything is going to be alright.
    from the BONUS - healthmonth-themed questions ...
    • What is your favorite healthmonth rule (whether or not you follow it), and why (optional)? Two rules give me a great energy high. Exercise 5 days a week and sleep at least 7 hours every day.
    • What is your least favorite healthmonth rule (whether or not you follow it), and why (optional)? Take a multivitamin every day. Yeah, so I intend to follow it, but prefer not to swallow a pill designed for a horse.
    • What is your healthy natural high? See above...exercise and sleep. :)
    • What do the voices in your head yell when you meet 100% of your daily goals? So far so good!
    • What do the voices in your head yell when you do not meet 100% of your daily goals? Okay, a set-back, but will recover tomorrow!
    • What sound or noise do you love when you exercise? Right now I'm shuffling among GNR, Don't Think by The Chemical Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, and some DJ Spooky. (So you probably get the picture, loud and fast.)
    • What sound or noise do you hate when you exercise? Muzak
    • What is your favorite curse word when you lose a life? Please see part one re profanity. Recall, you get a free drink out of this if you really want to know. :)
    • Who/What would you like to see as a new healthmonth spirit animal? A penguin. (Is this new?)
    • What athlete, exercise-guru, health-lifestyle-guru and/or health-philosophy(ies) do you like, have a crush on, love, or want to marry? Maria Sharapova, Andre Agassi (sans headband/mullet), Apollo Anton Ohno, and Dara Torres.
    • What athlete, exercise-guru, healthy-lifestyle-guru, or woo-woo-guru (i.e., a REAL person) would you like to kick in the shins, e.g., could live without, don't like, think s/he sucks, etc.? (don't worry, we'll get karma points back.) I agree with Smiles and PhoQueen ....Dr. Phil and Oprah.
    • If after you lost a few karma points for kicking someone in the shins (see above question), what would be the plant or animal you would you like to be reincarnated as? A seal
    • If/When you get to meet Buster (healthmonth-creator), what would you like to hear Buster say, and what "no-more-than-five-words" would you say to Buster?
      • Buster says: "Cocktails are calorie free."
      • I say to Buster: "You rock!"

    #love2011: thoughts for week 7

kindness ... yvette is dovetailing the love project week 7 assignment with a week's event by random acts of kindness. with valentine's day as part of the week, needless to say, there is lovin' and kindness being shared among many. and for some, a birthday greeting for my friend. just wanted to share a few thoughts ...

smiles and laughter ... a big "thank you!" to my friend l.a.g. in cubeopolis for her fabulous morning greeting. when i popped in to say good morning (with heart ears in tow), she smiled and laughed and said -
"thank you! you totally made my day."
    - and of course, i said -
    "you are welcome. my pleasure!"
    - and i left her cubicle with a big smile. (yes, don't think i didn't pop my head into others' cubes. who wouldn't want to see smiles and hear chuckles!) and THAT is all it takes. a quick acknowledgment of happiness and gratitude.

donating to share love and kindness ... as part of this year's secret valentine's activities, one of my gifts to my valentine included a donation to a local organization, the arc.

during the celebratory morning breakfast events for secret valentine participants, i shared with them tidbits about my participation in the love project. and i mentioned that love notes was last week's assignment and this week's assignment is kindness. my valentine told me that she LOVED the donating to an organization as part of another element for the annual secret valentine's activities. as part of her thank you note to secret valentine participants, she mentioned she is going to encourage others to consider donating to an organization - and perhaps also do so in the name of someone for whom they care.

that put a big smile on my face! hmmm ... speaking of ...

today's RAK challenge ... smile at ten strangers (details over here). given that our health month's team CDWL@edi requirement includes -
DAILY DO smile at least to one stranger
    - this means i just have to step up my game! no problema!

    thanks, love project,
for dovetailing with random acts of kindness ...
my cheeks will be hurting today! love it!

    h|month: pho queen shares ...

#healthmonth love ... team CDWL@edi's pho queen shared health month love with her cubeopolis toastmaster's group a couple of weeks ago. we figured it would be fitting to share it with others. enjoy!

how many of you have fitness and/or diet goals or resolutions for 2011? (great!)

now how many of you keep track of your physical activities or meals? (okay, there are less hands)

today i'm going to talk about three online tools that i'm using to help me reach my health goals this year. these three websites are fun, free of cost (with a minor caveat), and don't require a lot of your time. they are cubeopolis's race around the regions challenge (aka the president's challenge), my fitness pal (dot) com, and health month (dot) com. i'll briefly describe each one and give reasons why they work or why i like them. by the end of my speech, i hope to have motivated you or at the very least to spark your interest in some friendly online competition.

you probably have heard of cubeopolis's race around the region (ratr) challenge which uses president's challenge (dot) org. - friendly competition between all cubeopolis regional offices to earn 8,000 points, which is equivalent to the distance in miles around all ten of the cubeopolis's offices and cubeopolis headquarters. you start earning points by logging in your daily physical activities, which can range from exercise at the gym, to skiing, biking, running or even doing household chores. cubeopolis started officially counting points this past monday. through this friendly competition, you and your fellow employees have the chance to win prizes and improve your health. as an example, joe has already earned 646 points and smiles 1,750. i have a measly 236 points, but i am motivated to win a prize, even if it's a shirt or gym bag. an added bonus of bragging rights - recognition for our cubeopolis region to be the fittest and healthiest regional office. because the president's challenge is limited to tracking physical activities, i use the next website, my fitness pal (dot) com, to track my meals.

my fitness pal (mfp) is also a mobile app for iphone and droid. the website says "mfp is a diet and fitness community built with one purpose in mind - providing you with tools and support you need to achieve your weight loss goals." essentially, it's a food and exercise diary. studies have shown that the more you consistently track what you eat the more likely you are going to lose weight. mfp really is a buddy because it allow you to log all of your meals an counts your calories and other nutritional information such as carbs and proteins. it's a food database that remembers what you've eaten and what you most often eat. you don't have to do a search all the time, and you can even include home-cooked recipes. you can also get the support and motivation from friends. when i see my only frend log in her activities, it motivates me to do the same.

the last website is health month (dot) com. from the website, "health month is about taking the science of nutrition and behavior change and combining it with the social games of the web." in other words, it's a game to help improve your diet, fitness, mental health, relationship health, and financial health, while enjoying it. health month is also based on a point system, but more importantly, you get to craft your rules for the week and month, based on what's already available. for example, one rule that is already there is to exercise, but i crafted my rule to say "exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week." so far it's going bad because i lost points for not following this rule. it's a program that helps people take responsibility for their behavior, and it doesn't need to include diet or exercise goals.

ratr, my fitness pal, and health month are all worthwhile tools to help you reach and achieve your health goal and be accountable. for the record, i swear i did not get paid by any of these websites, but i can say that my compensation has come in the form of higher self-esteem, losing 2 pounds, eating healthier meals, and saving money on meals i create at home. i hope that, if anything, i've convinced you to use ratr to track your health goals so that our region is a healther one.

    thanks, pho queen,
    for the healthy chat!

psa: it's wear red day ...

go red! ... with #healthmonth in mind, i'll be sporting a red dress today, and i donated to the american heart association to acknowledge and support efforts for fighting heart disease.

your turn? ... it's simple and worthwhile.

one of my goals this year is ... to have a healthier lifestyle where i stop paying pharmaceuticals (by the end of 2011) for my bad eating and inactivity habits.

i have already created several healthier habits - better eating habits, more activity and exercise, and continued spiritual activities. health month is the flagship of my efforts, while dovetailing with other activities - president's challenge and betterU. and as part of my activities, FABULOUS support from friends!

health month side bar ... my february rules have been locked in. i've kept the majority of my january rules with a few changes, AND i've replaced habits i've developed with new rules and objectives, including learning to minimize gluten, processed food, and high fructose corn syrup.

back to go red ... here are some of the links from the "receipt" email you'll get when you donate -
    update ... today's red dress
    with a nice heart-shaped locket.

    and thanks to

    go red for women
    for

spur of the moment serpentine ...

(our #healthmonth celebratory dinner moment, pics)

serpentine ... an american-themed restaurant in san francisco (at the northeast corner of 3rd & 22nd in the dogpatch area), last night pho queen and shirlnutkin had a spur of the moment dinner date at serpentine (over yelp, on their site, and on open table), with their tag line of
    "honest food
    classic cocktails"

dinner is our ice cream dessert ... we had a pre-dinner ice cream date. this means - dinner came after ice cream at mr. and mrs. miscellaneous. we were walking back to my car, which was unknowingly parked in front of serpentine. frankly, we've been in that area fairly frequently and have never noticed the restaurant. (shame on us!) side note: they serve brunch, so we will add this to our breakfast buds - especially because they serve something called red flannel hash (for gadget man).

red meat for dinner ... yes, pho queen and shirlnutkin had our health month rules in mind. and we both decided to celebrate our january victories and our february fun with a savory dinner. our selections, with some sourdough bread and water (yes, no wine this time around) -

    spice braised lamb shank
roasted parsnips - yellow carrots - fregola sarda - cashews - cilantro mint chutney

grilled storm hill ranch hanger steak
roasted rainbow carrots - creamed nettles - sunchokes - crumbled feta - fried shallots - sage jus

our meals were fabulous! ... and oops - that was a shallot, not a garlic clove. and that was a sunchoke. yes - a return for a fun cocktail, a sweet dessert, and a breakfast buds brunch is in our future.

    celebrating health month ...
we finished with a great january - even with a few bumps in the road here and there (winter colds, cubeopolis work, socializing) - and are excited about mixing up our rules (and keeping some mainstays) for february.

    allowing limited red meat ...
we each have the rule limiting our red meat intake and therefore checked "yes" for our daily true-up. pho queen allows it twice a week and therefore has one more meat allowance until next tuesday, 02/08, while shirlnutkin used up her one allowance for the week - and her day 2 health month morning looks something like this ...
... with the remainder of her week looking like this - presuming i do not go over the quota i set for myself (and i will not go over my quota)few fun lessons learned? ... here are a few for me -
    • be mindful of our surroundings because we can discover new restaurants.
    • take the easier parking space that does not involve parallel parking.
    • eat dessert before dinner to eliminate having to eat dessert after dinner.
    • promote health month to the server because he commented on our "red meat" allowance jibber-jabber.
    • celebrate our on-going self-awareness of our health-minded choices.
    • breakfast buds must try brunch at serpentine (soon!).
    and create moments of
    and
enjoy spur of the moment girlfriend dates
